Are you easily distracted? It can be difficult to ignore the ping of an email and too easy to fall down rabbit holes. We all deal with distractions, every single day. They say that we underestimate what we can do in a month and overestimate what we can do in a day. Why? Because we massively underestimate all of the distractions and interruptions that will take our attention – people may pop into your orbit, or your own mind-chatter gets louder and needs tuning out. * Distancing yourself from distractions is key. Step away and create physical space away from the source of the distractions for a while. If social media is calling to you, close those browsers on your laptop and put your phone in a locked box for an hour. * Disrupt the interruption – put the kettle on, or have a five-minute walk around the block or the office. In those few minutes, your brain will reset and you'll return fresh to the situation. * Dream! Daydreaming, in work terms, is often seen negatively. The essence of it – letting your mind settle, wander and rest – is very helpful to practice. Walking away gives you a physical separation, whereas accessing a dream state provides an emotional separation from the distractions. 👀 If you're anything like me then you spend 99% of the time worrying that you love your friends so much more than they love you. I have a constant feeling that I'm more into my friendships than my friends are and that they're just thinking I'm annoying them all the time 🙃 I worry that I don't mean anything to them whilst I love them with everything I have. 👉 If you feel the same way, please know that it's the RSD talking. If you find it's becoming too much for you, there are so many things you can try to help challenge the negative thoughts. Here are three steps you can try next time you're having these thoughts: 1. Pause. Take a moment to stop and intentionally notice the thoughts you're having. Maybe write them down. Trying to resist or hide from the thoughts will only make them work harder to be heard. 2. Challenge. Question the thoughts and play a game of 'fact or belief' with yourself. What evidence do you have for the thoughts you're having? When you say your reasons out loud, how do they sound? 3. Reframe. Try thinking about this in a different way. What strengths/qualities do you bring to a friendship? What about you are you most proud of? Could you do something to be a good friend to yourself right now? As I said, there are so many ways to start to challenge your thoughts and these are just three you could try. 🧐 Do you have any tips you use when tackling RSD in friendships?!
