As I have just recently begun my 59th year around the sun, I so appreciate what I read in the post below. Shelley Zalis strikes at the heart of an issue that has bothered me for sometime now. The issue she describes is not reserved just for broadcast journalist. These wisdom filled woman are "being shown the exit" and marginalized when grey, wrinkles and gravitas has set in with almost every industry. An example of marginalization: the need for a speaker to a group comes up. The event coordinator ask the Millennials in the group to prepare a presentation. It ends up being a new version of something that we "older and wiser" women have not only been using our entire career, but perhaps we even created or co-created it in the first place. However, we are not asked to present it, and further gaslighted that it's a brand new idea. When we express this #truth in these respective groups, the result is met with further isolation, exclusion from opportunities, and being ostracized. Soon we are "being put out to pasture" so to speak. When I was new to business and working with those who came before me I was respectful, inspired, in some instances awe-struck, but always filled with priceless knowledge and much enthusiasm when I left the presence of those women of wisdom in my industry. I couldn't have done this without many of them. They taught me everything I needed to know (well almost) to be successful in this industry. I spent time at "fireside chats" or taking a speaker to breakfast that I'd never see again at a conference just to spend 30 minutes with her to gain insight into how she thought on a day-to-day basis. Performance and merit no longer seem to be what motivates these subsequent generations. This has resulted in that very few begin their career to work hard so that after years of said work, they move up (whether it's income or through promotion of position) they finally arrive at the place they have wanted to be in their personal and/or professional life. These generations succeeding me all want their POTENTIAL to be recognized and rewarded before the performance or merit has materialized. It takes at least these two things to arrive at success. One we can control, to some degree. That is knowledge. You can research and work really hard to gain immense knowledge in a subject matter to become a subject matter expert. However, the other trait that is needed to be truly successful is experience. That is the tincture of time. Many have tried and all have failed to control time. There is no way to shorten this part of the process. That's where the grey, wrinkly and gravitas afflicted come in. At every level, we have that. Our best years are ahead of us, not behind us. We don't want to retire, we want the option to work until we don't want to or can't. Allow us to impart our wisdom and it will shorten your path to success in ways you would've never thought possible. Give it a try! You'll find our door is always open.
As broadcast journalist Elizabeth Vargas so perfectly put it, “As a society, we put a lot of pressure on women to look a certain way, to act a certain way, to dress a certain way and particularly in television news, men are allowed to go grey and wrinkly and they have gravitas, and women are often shown the exit. I really wish as a society that we would value and honor women’s experience and women’s aging the same way we do men, because right now, it is definitely an uneven and unfair playing field.” We're finally starting to see a societal shift. With decades of experience and knowledge, our 50s and 60s (and then some!) are our prime!

World Press Freedom Day 📺📻📰🗞✍🏾! Today, we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, a time to reflect on the importance of a free and independent press in our society. As a broadcast journalist, I understand the power of storytelling and the responsibility that comes with it. Let us use this day to recognize the voices that often go unheard, especially women in media. Inclusivity is key to ensuring diverse perspectives are represented and respected. It's not just about giving a seat at the table; it's about amplifying those voices and ensuring they are heard loud and clear. As journalists, it's our duty to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and foster a culture of inclusivity in our newsrooms and beyond. Let's commit to providing equal opportunities for all journalists, regardless of gender, race, or background. On this World Press Freedom Day, let's take action to promote inclusivity and empower women in media. Together, we can build a more diverse and vibrant press that truly reflects the world we live in. #WorldPressFreedomDay #InclusivityMatters #EmpowerWomen #PressFreedom

Getting an overview at the Women in Media conference, from Petra Buchanan GAICD, of the Women In Media Australia annual industry report which has found - put bluntly - the older the woman, the more likely she is to have left journalism or be thinking about leaving. Reasons include unequal pay, lack of professional development and leadership opportunities, and lack of job security. This echoes the finding in suzanne franks global overview 2013 book, “Women and Journalism”, published by Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, ie 11 years ago: women outnumber men as journalism graduates and early career reporters, but decide to leave in greater numbers due to systemic inequities 😡. https://lnkd.in/gKbhDK7H

According to Reuters: Looking at a sample of ten top online news outlets and ten top offline news outlets in each of these 12 markets, we find that Only 24% of the 174 top editors across the 240 brands covered are women, despite the fact that, on average, 40% of journalists in the 12 markets are women. In 2023, this figure was 22% across the same markets. https://lnkd.in/dm2TiX_r... #WeSpeakYourLanguage #investinwomen

Women's March Interviews – Voices of Resistance (2017) – In this powerful 2017 interview, we sit down with several inspiring women who attended the Women's March the day after Trump's inauguration. With their unique perspectives and heartfelt insights, these older women share their concerns about the state of our democracy, illustrating how their experiences raising toddlers have equipped them to recognize the “tantrums” of a “man-baby” in power. As we revisit their thoughts, it becomes clear that their insights remain alarmingly relevant today—especially as we face the potential consequences of Project 2025 and the rise of MAGA politics. These women offer a blend of humor and wisdom that underscores the urgency of voting and standing up for our rights. Join us in re-sharing these interviews leading up to the 2024 election. It's time to get out and VOTE WOKE!
