Just going to throw this out there. Dunnhumby / Tesco Clubcard exploded in 1994.  The first truly mainstream implementation of effective personalisation. 30 years ago. In 2024 we still talk about personalisation as an ambition to achieve within industry verticals. 30 years later. All I’m saying is; any new tech / approach / paradigm has a ton of potential. Things become a little more mainstream (but stay within a ‘specialist’ bubble for a good period of time - and make no mistake, despite the media hype, we’re absolutely still here). I see commentary around Rabbit, Humane…criticism of Siri, Bixby and more.   But there’s a long, long way to go before we even come close to realising the potential. We’re going to see a LOT of POCs, a LOT failure (https://lnkd.in/eAvsByxc) and a LOT of false dawns (https://lnkd.in/e-xEXBjf) before the true utility and value of effective, ’blended AI’ solutions emerge.  And emerge they will.  But the key phrase here isn’t ’AI’. It’s ‘blended’.  AI will become indispensable.  But it’ll do so in combination with your ways of working, your operations, your processes, your people.  Explore the future, but secure the foundations of your present.

Tesco is exploring how AI could change the way people shop, revealing an interesting and somewhat controversial approach. Tesco's chief executive, Ken Murphy, shared that the supermarket is considering using artificial intelligence (AI) to leverage its Clubcard data in a way that could "nudge" customers toward purchasing certain products. This effort would not only highlight better deals but also suggest healthier options for customers. Murphy described how AI could encourage shoppers to make smarter decisions: for instance, by alerting them to upcoming discounts, like suggesting they wait a week to purchase an item that might soon be on offer. In addition to helping with cost-saving, the AI could provide personalised nutritional recommendations. If it detects that a shopper's basket consistently contains products high in sodium, the AI could suggest lower-sodium alternatives to improve heart health. Murphy envisions this system as a way to simplify decisions that shoppers may not put much thought into, but which can significantly impact their health and spending. This innovative use of AI raises interesting possibilities for both consumers and the retail industry. On one hand, it's an exciting opportunity for shoppers to gain greater control over their budgets and well-being, with personalised advice potentially making the shopping experience more efficient and beneficial. On the other hand, some consumers may see this as intrusive or manipulative. After all, the idea of a supermarket guiding purchases, even for well-intentioned reasons, could feel like overreach for those who prefer to make choices independently. Furthermore, there may be concerns around data privacy and how much control shoppers really have over the use of their purchasing behaviour. In addition to consumer benefits, Tesco is also looking at reducing food waste within its own supply chain. The retailer is set to open a new facility designed to turn surplus food into animal feed, with the capacity to process 1,000 tonnes of surplus food weekly. This aligns with the broader trend of retailers taking responsibility for sustainability, addressing both consumer needs and operational efficiency. An AI-powered voice ordering technology was developed in partnership with IBM and launched at 100 McDonald’s drive-thru locations across the United States. But a series of viral TikTok videos started appearing recently where the AI failed to comprehend different accents, got confused by background noise and misunderstood and messed up orders. 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭: it gave one person hundreds of dollars worth of chicken nuggets and gave another customer an ice cream cone topped with bacon. 🤢 Suffice it to say no brand wants this kind of ridicule as publicity.
