April is National Minority Health Month! This is a time for us to reflect on the importance of dismantling discrimination in healthcare. We also want to highlight the AAMFT 2024 Systemic Ethics Textbook's chapter on 'Dismantling Discrimination: Antidiscrimination and Social Policy in Marriage and Family Therapy Practice.' This chapter delves into vital discussions around recognizing and addressing discrimination within therapy and counseling settings, emphasizing the need for cultural competence and sensitivity. As we advocate for health equity, it's crucial to acknowledge the systemic barriers faced by racial and ethnic minorities in accessing quality healthcare. Let's continue to foster inclusivity, challenge biases and advocate for equitable healthcare for all. Keen on investing time & energy into strengthening relationships... and enhancing the finer qualities of those relationships to create our future. Think globally, act locally, interact ethically!
For National Minority Health Month I have two suggested readings. The chapter referenced below in the new AAMFT ethics textbook, and my recent article entitled: “Provider, Heal Thy System: An Examination of Institutionally Racist Regulatory Structures and Practices” — Thanksnfor the reminder, Shari N. Olarte, MA, CAE ! #healthcare #equity https://lnkd.in/g4Jb6c33

Very interesting read on the use of citizen-led ballot initiatives related to healthcare and social determinants of health. It’s so important to encourage civic engagement of marginalized groups to really begin to move the needle on health equity. #healthyequity

This important report, hot off the press as of April 2024 by Population Institute, highlights practices that many people don't even realize are happening in the United States - child marriage, FGM, and femicide. As pointed out, "A September 2022 report from the Violence Policy Center shows a 24% increase in femicide in the United States between 2014 and 2020 - And women in the United States are 28 times more likely to die by firearm homicide than women in other high-income nations. There is a dire need for early prevention strategies and awareness-building, improved surveillance and research, and preventative laws."

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) have collaborated to address racism and discrimination as determinants of health. They have provided input to the EU's anti-racism policy through a participatory forum. A conference was held to discuss the impacts of racism and discrimination on the health of people of African Descent and formulate recommendations for the post-2025 EU Anti-racism Action Plan. These recommendations include recognizing racism as a determinant of health, meaningful participation of affected communities, inclusive language, disaggregated equality data, policy mainstreaming, and addressing racism in healthcare and science. The recommendations will be formally handed over to the European Commission for consideration.
