Food apartheid may be the best suited description and context for those suffering within the margins of society today. What are the ramifications of being created to have good food yet, going a lifetime without it? How might we as the church step into the gospel message as it is proclaimed through true nutritional wellbeing and the ministry of presence? In this episode we are joined by public theologian, food justice strategist, professor and author Dr. Yvette R. Blair-Lavallais, as we discuss food insecurity, particularly around women in black and brown communities who suffer under the weight of systemic food injustice.

In this interview, I discuss the social impact of my business including how I work to decrease rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol in Black and Brown communities to create generational health™. Written in 2021 at the height of the pandemic, this was an increasingly important issue due to the trends noticed with co-morbidities with Covid and their affect on people's abilities to fight the illness while having another diagnosis. “Changing eating habits isn’t just about food—it’s about preserving culture and identity.” When we talk about changing eating habits, especially within cultures where community and food are deeply intertwined, the conversation must be sensitive and gentle. Food is not just sustenance; it’s a cornerstone of identity, tradition, and community connection. Suggesting changes can feel like asking someone to give up a piece of their heritage. As healthcare providers, it’s crucial to approach these conversations with empathy and respect. We need to communicate that our goal is not to strip away cultural identity, but to enhance it by finding healthier alternatives that still honor tradition. It’s about creating a balance—maintaining the cultural significance of food while also promoting longevity and quality of life. When I speak with patients, I emphasize that we can work together to find ways to keep the essence of their cultural eating habits. We can explore healthier recipes, portion control, and incorporating nutritious ingredients that don’t sacrifice flavor or tradition. This way, we preserve the joy and connection that food brings to their lives, while also fostering better health outcomes. Changing eating habits should feel like gaining something valuable—better health, more energy, and a longer life to enjoy those meaningful moments with loved ones. It’s about building a bridge between cultural preservation and health promotion. Let’s strive to support our patients in making these adjustments in a way that feels respectful and empowering. By doing so, we honor their identity and community while promoting better health. Americans are sicker than ever, and it’s not only resulting in poor physical and mental health; it’s impacting our economy, our environment, our children’s future, and our national security. On today’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to my longtime friend, activist, and Presidential candidate, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. about how we got here and what’s needed to turn things around. Addressing the health crisis requires a comprehensive approach, including improving access to healthy food, incentivizing healthcare providers to focus on prevention and root causes, and holding corporations accountable for their role in promoting unhealthy products. We discuss how corporate capture–in the public and private sectors—hinders efforts to address the root causes of chronic diseases and keeps America sick. We also discuss his plan for reducing healthcare costs, the mental health crisis, and much more. Find the episode here: https://bit.ly/4b39F1D

Mark Hyman, MD Well said… Industrial lobby for 🏭 BigFood , BigPharma, BigInsurance, BigHealthCare, BigLabs the likes will continue to fund our BigPolitics to keeping the 5P ecosystem (Patient, Payer, Provider, Pharma, & Partners) fat dumb and happy. To understand its complexity please read some of my articles posted in my profile the past 2 years! Many other leaders have said the same. We the Patients (Public/People) should raise up to elect the right Politicians who could help change the system… then all will fall in place to educate our young about nutrition, real health, wealth happiness! Http://bit.ly/platformhealth Leaders, writers, influencers in social media and some amazing thought leaders in our current broken 5P ecosystem tagged here are some of those who are doing things to break this visuous killing of People Patients and Population in the name of todays HEALTHCARE system (which is neither helath nor care). Both Technology, Leadership & Politicians are REQUIRED to change it for the BETTER.
