Making a Difference We all want to make a difference in the world. We all want to matter. This is a fundamental human need. If you run a business or really, any organization with people, it is important, essential even to show people how they make a difference in their jobs and how the company makes a difference. When I ran a contractor organization, I liked to be the final interview before someone was hired (unless I was hiring a direct report, which was obviously different). I would ask a prospective employee to take a seat and ask him about himself, something outside of work. I would ask about interests and goals. I would try to show interest in the person, show that he mattered to me as a person. At some point, I would tell the person how important his job was to the company. Then, I would talk about how important the company was to our customers. "We serve the people who service our nation," I would say. "These are the people who keep our lights on at night, who make sure our toilets flush and our showers are hot, who keep our homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and who improve our building environments to make them more functional and enjoyable. What they do is essential. It matters." I would continue. "The problem is too many of them live lives of sustainance when they deserve lives of prosperity. They know how to turn a wrench, but not how to turn a profit because they have have been to trade school, but there is no owner school. And this is where we come in. We help them 'improve their business and financial performance, leading to a profitable exit.' It's our mission and it's not just words on paper. It's what we believe. It's a calling." By this point, I'm getting would up and more intense. "If you want to be part of our team, you have to internalize our mission. When we help a business prosper and we help the owners and their families, the employees and their families, their suppliers and customers. We help the community.
