Last month, we attended the Architects Action for Affordable Housing (AA4AH) workshop event that brought together architects, planners, local councillors, and industry professionals to debate and discuss the campaign’s five affordable housing priorities that will be presented to Labour and the MHCLG team in the coming weeks. We felt it was important to bring a different perspective on the challenges specific to North of England, especially around land value and viability, vacant and sub-standard homes, and the disparity between the north and south. The workshop produced five key priorities to lobby the government: 1. Treating affordable housing as critical infrastructure 2. Implementing a new national procurement model 3. Reforming NPPF for more community-led housing 4. If Passive House standards should be enforced for all new affordable housing 5. The red tape for Queensland development approvals is set to be slashed under a plan to bolster housing. The streamlined program will see some development approval times cut down from an average of four years to 75 days. Expressions of interest are now open for developers to submit designs. Queensland Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon says the program will prioritise projects close to public transport services and will include at least 15 per cent of affordable housing. The program is under the state's Homes for Queenslanders plan, which aims to deliver 53,000 social homes by 2046. The government has announced a major overhaul of the planning system to address the housing crisis and boost economic growth.
