This week on my YouTube channel I'm sharing every piece of insight I have to help you become a National Geographic Explorer. These are lessons I’ve learned from getting a grant from the National Geographic Society myself, from exchanging notes with tons of other NatGeo filmmakers, and from years of attending the National Geographic Storyteller’s Summit in which I’ve gone to sessions specifically on how to get their grants. I’m going to go over what a National Geographic Explorer grant is, who should apply, how to apply for one, what will make your application stand out, how you’re most likely to screw it up, what you should do if you get accepted or rejected, and lastly, I’ll get real about the biggest value of a NatGeo grant, which I’m going to guess, might surprise you. I make finding buried utilities and scanning concrete look easy. I'm also a podcaster. I also love the work that I do. More specifically, I love doing the work that I do so that I can associate with the people that I do.
This resonates with me soooo much! Enhanced Scanning recently finished two large #utilitylocating projects that used #groundpenetratingradar #GPR and other technologies. For each of these projects, we won the work AFTER the customer talked with other utility locating companies (including, in each case, some very large competitors). The customers either needed a deliverable that our competitors couldn't produce, or they needed data collected in an environment that our competitors didn't know how to work in. Even though we are a very small company, over the years, we have gained the experience and the professional connections necessary to collect high-quality data in challenging environments and then to create first-class deliverables from that data. These skills and connections have been gained through two sources: LinkedIn and attending/exhibiting at industry trade shows. For example, Arian and I will be going to New Orleans next week to exhibit at the #GlobalESC, put on by the Excavation Safety Alliance. I expect to see old friends, learn new techniques, create important professional connections, AND have fun. (If I could have described school that way I would have earned much better grades!) With Sean Fabor, PE and Kent Groh, PLS, I extol trade show attendance as a key component to both the growth and relevance of companies of ALL sizes. P.S. You should watch or listen to this entire episode of The Concrete Conversations Podcast with Hosts Arian & Forrest Sim on YouTube or Spotify. These guys had a lot of valuable perspectives...and no shortage of humor. #ForrestSim
Don't get left behind - the crucial role of continuous learning in surveying! On this episode of Concrete Conversations hosted by Forrest🪓 Sim, Sean Fabor, PE and Kent Groh, PLS of The Geoholics emphasizes the importance of staying up-to-date and the valuable experience of attending conferences. Geospatial Analysis | Environmental Science | Technical Writing | NACIS Board Member & Mentor Program Coordinator
The North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS) occupies a special place in my ❤️ as I know it does for many others. I am on my long commute back after presenting at NACIS 2024 in Tacoma & I'm still riding the energy of the conference collaborations. In 2021 this org helped solidify for me a major mid-career shift. I always enjoyed studying & analyzing the environmental ecosystems around me. But I had been nervous in considering to shift this lense through an entirely geospatial focus for a career. In 2021, I had finished one year in my digital mapping M.S. at Univ of KY and was still unsure if I'd be able to fully shift into the digital mapping world after the degree program was over. What would the professional environment be like? Super competitive like academia with everyone clawing to make a name and meet administrative requirements? Would it ignore a new-comer having not been in the field long enough and therefore require me to take a massive pay cut and start at the bottom? Would the work be static in SOPs never permitting creativity? Attending my first NACIS in OKC in 2021 and all the side chats with current/retired professionals willing to share their origin story to mapping (often times not being their initial profession) gave me more confidence. They discussed their tips & tricks for finding space & thriving; that the mapping world is never static & always evolving with creativity. And there was no sense of competition. It was all a network of supportive folks wishing everyone the best, sharing whatever knowledge they had knowing we all grow and improve the more we share. The last 4 years of this meeting always served this same energy! Each person whose names I had been seeing in class as authors of our books, at the fore front of changes in accessibility, ethics, and technological tutorials, still took time to chat to a new-comer. Inviting me with open arms to participate in the conversation while actually listening to what I had to offer. Members were so encouraging in fact they nominated & elected me for a board member at large position in 2022. During my board tenure the organization trusted my wild idea to create an entirely new mentor program among the members (thank goodness for the co-coordinators Kate Leroux Victoria (Vicky) Johnson-Dahl and Nat K). During the last two years this program served ~90 members & the feedback from participants at the conference this year showed how much the community connections grew because of a simple structure being implemented and trusted. This may have been my last year on the board (to date 😉) but the community will no doubt continue to ever shine with its new members! All that to say, if this sounds like a group you'd like to try, I couldn't recommend it more. If you're in the vicinity of Kentucky, make your calendars, NACIS is coming to Louisville Oct 2025! Join me & I'll introduce you to the mappiest group of folks I know across the North American continent.
