Aging member base is a critical question for the CU industry You might be earning huge revenues by doing the usual stuff like branch banking and serving the boomers with high profits and mimimal charge offs But you’re chasing your grave by ignoring the long term growth, which lies in Gen Z And the needs of the new generation are significantly different Example Genz loves to bank in a insta like UI Over visiting a bank in a beautiful building They love to plan for the next Africa trip Rather than planing for long term goals like kids ed Even worse a lot of them will turn DINKs (double income no kids) CU’s need to seriously consider this issue, cause making these changes will require a radical strategic transformation
Today, I had the pleasure of presenting to the League of Southeastern Credit Union’s Small Credit Union Roundtable on the topic of Aging Credit Union Membership. The question remains: why aren't younger consumers joining credit unions? I believe that credit unions have a lot to offer to younger generations, and it's up to us to make sure they know about it. By understanding the unique needs and preferences of younger consumers, we can better tailor our services to meet their needs. No Credit Union Left Behind | Passionate Advocate for Financial Empowerment | Data and Research Geek | CU Lover for Life | Purpose Chaser | Changemaker
Every year US credit unions come together at the Governmental Affairs Conference to advocate for financial inclusion and meet with lawmakers impacting the advocacy. We live in an era where embracing of diversity equity, inclusion, belonging and acceptance is still not unified. Our industry needs to be a leader in ensuring EVERYONE has an opportunity to have financial empowerment. Each person has their own story, their own history, their own needs...all of which comprise the tapestry of how their needs are met. As an industry we need to do better by finding ways to say "yes". This may mean that we cant say yes right now but we also provide pathways to get to a yes. There are too many sitting on the sidelines quick to criticize what IS being done instead of being part of the solution. In my opinion this is part of the problem-- doing nothing or "someone else is doing it." My advuce.. actively get involved. If you see something that needs changing at your credit union or in your community, volunteer to be a part of finding the solution. Your action or contribution may just be the missing link to solving the problem. But you wont know if you don't try.

Seven months ago, I was on a quest to do more for small credit unions, in particular. I have always been an advocate for credit unions; so much so that for 1.5 years I went to work with a CU partner who also worked with banks. I missed spending 100% of my time working with credit unions so went in and "fired" myself (CEO was a friend.. :)) because my heart was really with credit unions. Fast forward 14 years and here we are in a period of more small credit union mergers, more De Novo credit unions trying to get chartered, a larger number of credit union CEOs retiring. Credit unions are such an integral part of the financial inclusion tapestry. So back to 7 months ago, I was ready to find a small group that had the same passion that I did. And poof, I was led to Denise Wymore, GSD, Nick Wodogaza, CUDE and Walter Merkle to begin this journey. We didn't have a set agenda; we just all had the heart and passion to ensure that small credit unions in particular could survive and thrive. This journey has ebbed and flowed in the months that passed. I have never felt more "alive" working in the credit union movement. I am in awe of the many of individuals and partners who all feel the same way. Slowly many of these people have come out with their banners waiving with the same theme...#NoCreditUnionLeftBehind." Our little group has expanded a bit but every step is a step forward. What this past 7 months has shown me is that you should never doubt the impact that one voice can have and then another, and another..... If you are a credit union evangelist, enthusiast, supporter, co-pilot...whatever banner you want to wear...shout it from the rooftops. Small credit unions need you, the credit union movement needs you, YOUR communities need you. I need you.
