I had an opportunity to introduce decision records to Pento. It improved our thinking, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. IMO, this is one of the great multipliers for learning more from the incredible engineers in our companies and creating something better than we ever could on our own. Guess what is the first thing I proposed in HiBob? 😉 #documentation #softwareengineering #tech

DevEx is a concept that analyzes the friction developers face in their daily work and serves as a metric for leaders to improve productivity. I came across this fascinating article, and here is what I learned. DevEx has three dimensions that affect dev-team friction: - Feedback loops: The speed and quality of responses developers receive after performing tasks such as code change reviews. Short feedback loops increase efficiency. - Cognitive load: The mental effort required by developers to complete tasks. High cognitive load occurs when tasks are complex or risky, such as deploying a new feature or developing using poor documentation. - Flow state: A highly focused mental state where developers feel immersed in their work, boosting productivity. Frequent interruptions like incidents or failed deployments disrupt flow.

Your developers are more productive: now what? Harvesting the developer productivity surplus has been a key topic in roundtables and workshops at #GartnerApps this week in Las Vegas. We've heard from leaders responsible for 5000+ developers, as well as others responsible for less than 100 developers, and the points are similar. Some stand-out points include: - It's not only about developers being more productive in software development itself, but developers being *less unproductive* in everything else. Tools like Glean, which help developers find answers fast, have come up regularly. So have internal developer portals such as Port →, Cortex, or Backstage from Spotify. Many people asking if these types of tools - AI-enabled search and portals - will come together. - It's easy to say "move from measuring outputs to measuring outcomes" but every organization is different. Here at the conference we have attendees from government, from retail, from insurance, and every other industry you can imagine. An outcome for a defense agency is different from an outcome for a supermarket chain. - Creating developer "flow" is key. The way to improve productivity is not to focus on productivity, but focus on improving developer experience instead. I'll be talking about this in my session this afternoon: Leadership Vision for Software Engineering: Generative AI, Developer Productivity, and Developer Experience. Andrew White Rita Sallam

Quantifying the value of low/no-code goes beyond simply tracking #development time or identifying cost savings. It's about demonstrating how these tools empower your #business to become more agile, efficient, and user-centric. Let's analyze critical areas for measuring the success of the low/no-code initiatives for business owners to showcase the transformative power of this technology. The first step is to shift your focus from development time alone to the broader business value delivered by your low/no-code solutions. This encompasses metrics that directly impact your organization's #performance and efficiency. Consider the reduced development time low/no-code offers compared to traditional #coding methods. This translates to faster project completion, quicker resolution to internal problems, and the ability to launch new ideas into the market at record speed. Additionally, low-code and #nocode solutions can potentially increase efficiency across the board. This can be measured through improved team productivity, streamlined workflows, and faster onboarding of new solutions by employees with varying technical skill sets. The cost savings associated with #lowcode and no-code are also significant. By utilizing these platforms instead of traditional development approaches, you can reduce development costs, lower maintenance expenses, and potentially save on licensing fees. These cost savings can be quantified and directly compared to your previous expenditures, providing a clear picture of the financial benefits of low/no-code adoption. However, the impact of low/no-code extends far beyond cost savings and efficiency. When implemented effectively, such solutions can improve the #userexperience for internal and external stakeholders. This can be measured through user satisfaction surveys and tracking adoption rates of low/no-code built applications. By focusing on user needs throughout the development process, low/no-code solutions can deliver intuitive and user-friendly tools that empower employees and potentially improve #customer satisfaction when used externally. Remember, don't just track numbers. Share compelling stories of how low/no-code empowered specific teams to solve problems or innovate. Showcase the human element and the positive impact on your workforce. By embracing leveraging the potential to empower your teams, you can unlock new possibilities for #innovation and #growth within your organization. Join the FlowMates #community and discover how low/no-code can empower your team to build the future today!
