It was an honor for my wife and I to participate in this congressional briefing. Without the support from the NIH Brain Initiative to fund my deep brain stimulation clinical trial for Major Depressive Disorder I would most likely be dead. Until I received the call from the NIH it never clicked that the government saved my life. I always just looked at is at Mt Sinai did. That’s not the case. Here is why this congressional briefing was so important: Thanks to Congressional support, since 2014, the NIH BRAIN Initiative has invested more than $3.5 billion supporting over 1,500 projects, which have enabled researchers to understand the brain at unprecedented levels of detail, bringing innovative treatments for devastating brain disorders closer to clinical use. Without BRAIN Initiative research, we will be relying on out-of-date maps of the human brain, leaving us in the dark about how the human brain works in health and disease. Without continued BRAIN research, we will not be able to optimize successful human neurotechnologies, leaving them unavailable for the millions of people living with devastating neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. 2024 funding for the brain initiative was cut > 40%. We need to get funding back to the normal levels in order to continue to advance research in the most complex computer in the world, the brain. Please reach out to your Congressman or Senator to emphasize the importance of funding the brain initiative.

#BrainAwarenessWeek is happening here! 🧠 Each day during #BrainWeek Mentoring in Neuroscience Discovery at Sinai (MiNDS) will post special #BAW2024 neuroscience blogs. TODAY, March 15th, CHECK OUT "Unlocking the Mysteries of the Brain through Intracranial Recordings" by Lizbeth Nuñez Martinez. Have you ever wondered how our thoughts form, how our memories last, or how our emotions arise? Well, buckle up, because we are about to delve into a fascinating realm of neuroscience: intracranial electrophysiology! In simple terms, this is the measurement of activity in different brain regions from recording electrodes placed directly into the brain. We are still committed to your health literacy, especially on this Brain Awareness Week. Do you know what neuroscientists study? "Neuroscientists focus on the biological mechanisms underlying brain functioning to ultimately provide a better understanding of the diseases" (1). BIAL has a strong commitment with neurosciences, particularly related to Epilepsy and Parkinson's Disease. Week 11 marks the international #BrainAwarenessWeek, during which the spotlight worldwide is on the brain and brain health. At Lundbeck Foundation, we are committed to advancing research in neuroscience. Our efforts, in supporting brain research, are based on a vision to enhance the understanding of the brain, its functions, and the disorders that affect it. An integral part of our support for brain research involves education and outreach. We focus on raising awareness of how best to care for our brain, both now and in the future. #BrainWeek.

Millions suffer from amblyopia, or lazy eye, which disrupts vision. Mark Bear at The Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has a promising new treatment that temporarily anesthetizes the “good” eye to help retrain the brain. “We see, quite remarkably, a very dramatic and surprisingly rapid recovery of vision to the amblyopic eye,” says Bear. “It can be a complete recovery of vision." Bear's research on brain plasticity also addresses Fragile X syndrome, aiming for breakthroughs in intellectual disability and autism. With ongoing trials and innovative approaches, Bear and his team are developing promising new treatments for the condition. On our most recent #TransparencyThursday Q&A we have Esperanza Domingo Gil at the University of Bremen, just in time for the #BrainAwarenessWeek. Esperanza highlights the need for studies #monkeys to advance the field of basic #neuroscience research – in this case, to understand how attention works! Esperanza explained why this type of research is important: “My hope is that basic research such as this can unravel these very exciting mysteries of the brain, so that in the future, other researchers can build upon our findings to help heal the brain when disease or age take over,” she said. A federal state ruling recently halted another basic research neuroscience study, involving monkeys at the Cognitive Neurophysiology Research Group, which the University has now appealed through the German courts. 🧠 First Time Ever in Neuroscience 🪰 Scientists have mapped the entire brain of a fruit fly! This tiny brain holds nearly 140,000 neurons and over 50 million connections, making it the most detailed brain map ever made. By studying how this tiny brain works, we can learn more about how all brains function, including the human brain! This exciting finding could help us get closer to understanding and treating diseases like dementia, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. It’s incredible what we can learn from something so small!
