Another great meeting and talk I had during my visit to Valencia for the "Placemaking and Sport" capacity building and project meeting was with Valencia Ciudad del Running. I was genuinely impressed by Álex Heras's presentation on the story behind Valencia's vision to become the "City of Running." Two key points I took from his presentation were: - Valencia's "red thread strategy" maximizing the city's natural elements and surroundings for sports and active recreation. - The focus on ecosystem building by creating and maintaining a vibrant community of clubs, teams, and citizens passionate about running and sport. The story of Valencia Ciudad del Running starts with its launch in January 2014, aiming to consolidate Valencia as an international reference in the running world. This initiative, promoted by the Fundacion Trinidad Alfonso in collaboration with the Valencia City Council, unites major athletic events in the city which also hold a World Athletics Label. The economic impact is also significant, with running events generating over €70 million annually for the local economy. I am not a runner myself; I am more of the walking kind. But I was, yet again, impressed by the story of the 'Circuit 5K Jardí del Turia,' initiated and financed by Valencia Ciudad del Running. The running path is a dedicated lane for runners, spanning 5,731 meters along the old bed of the Turia River. It features special pavement, signage, lighting, bio-healthy areas, and numerous benefits for runners. All who have been to Valencia and enjoyed the Turia River can agree that this circuit has truly become the nerve center of running in Valencia, embodying the city's commitment to promoting health and wellness through sports. For me, Valencia's vision of becoming the "City of Running" showcases how strategic initiatives and dedicated infrastructure can transform a city into a hub for active life enthusiasts—not only running but all types of sports and activities. Similar to Nice, which I visited earlier this year, Valencia provides great examples of what can happen when a city is dedicated to creating healthier urban environments that nudge residents towards sports and active living. If you know of or have experienced other successful sports-centered urban planning initiatives, please share! #urbanhealth #placemaking #activerecreation #sport

6 ways to do Christmas in Copenhagen like a local🎄 Whether you're visiting Copenhagen for leisure or business, we always recommend that you do like the locals and seek out more authentic experiences and activities. And Christmas is no exception. Here are our 6 ways to do Copenhagen during Christmas: 🎄Traditional Christmas lunch: Chances are you've already heard about our delicious open-faced sandwiches known as smørrebrød. But during the festive season, this delicacy truly takes centre stage when Copenhageners go for traditional Christmas lunches with friends, family and colleagues. Going to a smørrebrød restaurant is a must - just make sure to book in advance. 🎄 Gløgg: We've said it before, and we'll say it again. No Christmas in Copenhagen is complete without mulled wine, also known as gløgg. In fact, you'll be hard-pressed to find a Dane who can remember a December month where gløgg did not play a part. Whether you drink it at Christmas markets, food markets or cafes, there is some for every taste. And lots of non-alcoholic options as well. 🎄Christmas markets: Copenhagen is a genuine Christmas city, where it is impossible not to get in the spirit for the Christmas holiday season. The best place to soak up the atmosphere is at one of Copenhagen’s many Christmas markets. 🎄 Santa Lucia parade: On 13 December, you can experience an alternative take on the traditional Danish Santa Lucia parade, when kayaks sail through the city's canals dressed in lights and Christmas decorations. 🎄 Ice skating: Across the city, there are several picturesque ice skating rinks that attract locals and visitors of all ages and ice skating abilities😉. 🎄Alternative spa experience: Get your saltwater injection in a spa sailing around Copenhagen’s harbour or enjoy the unrivalled harbour views. CopenHot offers a spa experience that we bet you’ve never tried before. Relax in an outdoor hot tub with 40-degree hot water that guarantees you'll get warm even on a cold winter day. You can also opt for an authentic sauna session in one of the wood-fired saunas. Our colleagues at Visit Copenhagen have gathered the best tips for an authentic Christmas in Copenhagen.👇 https://lnkd.in/gKpHNy57

Fort Wayne's first climbing gym JUST opened and we're already taking down the routes on the climbing walls. Here's why. 1. Variety and Challenge: Regularly resetting routes keeps the climbing experience fresh and engaging for members. If climbers only face the same problems repeatedly, it can lead to stagnation. 2. Skill Development: Routes vary in difficulty, style, and technique. By changing them, route setters can introduce climbers to new moves or skills they may not have encountered before. 3. Community Engagement: A regularly updated gym fosters a sense of community, as climbers come together to try new routes, exchange beta (tips), and celebrate successes. So every 2 weeks, we'll reset one of three sections of Summit City Climbing Co. Have you tried climbing at your local gym yet?

The VRC knows how to put on a great event. Over the decades, the "Melbourne Cup" has endured as one of the world’s best horse racing events despite attendance across the world rapidly declining. Even recently, the iconic Singapore Horse racing track closed to become an affordable housing estate. Singapore is the Gold Standard for its "social responsibility" in providing enough availability of affordable rental accommodation. The VRC has a vast holding of inner-city, suburban Melbourne, much land not necessarily needed for its ongoing activities. In the middle of the worst housing crisis in Victoria's history, even serviced by hundreds of millions of dollars of Public-funded transport infrastructure, in today's values, it is grossly underutilised. Maybe for a few weeks of the year, how many inner-city suburban Horse racing tracks have their heavy railway terminals in the world? There is an opportunity for the VRC to create a lasting legacy in Victoria with "inclusive" quality residential grade mid-rise apartment walkable villages fostering community bonds and social cohesion. These are the key attributes of a community looking out for each other. Even emulating many of my previous major urban projects with no mandatory requirements just through my initiative and "sense of social responsibility" setting aside between 30% to 50% for affordable housing. Especially for Melbourne's Essential Workers who struggle to find affordable rental accommodation with easy access to their jobs from Melbourne's vast availability of Railway infrastructure, such an "inclusive" major urban project could potentially create long-term income for the VRC and create a long-term destination, a potential "City within a City," creating a key National and International tourism growth driver. #Flemington #MelbourneCup #inclusiveness #residentialgrade #midrise

Following the Festival in March, a significant amount of feedback was received from racegoers that highlighted their growing concerns over the cost of accommodation locally in Cheltenham. The issue was so extreme it created newspaper headlines both sides of the Irish channel. We were left with little doubt that hotel prices had now developed into a major deterrent for people contemplating multi-day attendance at our event. Furthermore, those responsible for promoting Cheltenham and the Borough in general, were concerned about the perception the elevated hotel costs were having on the towns image as a whole. Together, we staged a number of meetings with local accomodation providers, as well members of the hospitality trade. Those who run restaurants and pubs in town were claiming they were seeing business decline as a result of raceday patrons opting to stay out of town, where overnight accomodation could be sourced much cheaper. The Festival wasn’t as good for business as it had been in the past. There was some fascinating and thought provoking debate, and I think discussing the situation so robustly and openly has led to many hotels taking a seemingly more customer centric view in regards to their prices for Festival 2025. The best outcome from all the discussion for me though was the creation of Room To Race, in partnership with Venatour Sports Travel. Room To Race is a “one stop shop” for racegoers wanting to secure accomodation, transport to and from the races, as well as other experience enhancing benefits. It’s a first in British racing, as far as I know. It is pleasing that many of the hotels who were prepared to meet with Cheltenham Racecourse post Festival have signed up to be part of the concept and I am sure those racegoers who opt to book their accommodation through Room To Race in its initial year will reap the reward. The service will only go from strength to strength as we learn what our customers want and need. Room To Race is not the final answer to tackling high accomodation costs, but it does go some way to providing a good solution for our visiting racegoers —- and along with initiatives such as the multi-day ticket offer, groups of six incentive, should bring down the cost of attendance at the Festival for many. https://lnkd.in/eJ8TZ6Rk
