Although we focus on adaptive reuse for housing #hotelconversionqueen, I believe office buildings for healthcare is a much closer cousin with potentially much lower redevelopment costs. Now banking needs to catch up with the high demand of adaptive reuse in #commercialrealestate.

The lack of parking on NHS sites is a universal issue except where other, more efficient, options are available - as we find in metropolitan areas. Hospitals drifted to the outskirts of our towns for a variety of reasons, but now many ambulatory services are better suited to community locations. By piggy-backing on existing but underused infrastructure in Town centres we reduce pressure on acute sites and hard wire the opportunity for a wider range of travel options. Most significantly those already reliant on public transport, coincidentally a cohort also heavily reliant on NHS services, will benefit enormously - often reducing a 2 bus journey to a single direct route. A further by-product will be a genuine contribution to high street and town centre regeneration, and not just superficial and sometimes damaging gentrification.
Travelling miles outside towns on infrequent buses or by car in congested traffic to queue for oversubscribed parking spaces is increasingly becoming the old model for providing healthcare. The Health on the High Street model – where town centre buildings, such as empty retail units and leisure centres, or even former industrial buildings are repurposed at convenient locations close to public transport links and/or a walkable distance from homes – is becoming increasingly popular.
