As we reflect on this day, it is clear that the G7 Summit – a coalition of seven world leading economies viz. Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States - has played a crucial role in shaping the global economic and political landscape across half a century. 🎯 Allow me to analyze in three key points, the profound impact and influence the G7 Summit has had. 1. 🌐 Promoting Economic Stability: The inception of the G7 Summit was a response to the global economic crisis in the early 70s. Over the years, the Summit has proven instrumental in orchestrating economic policy responses, fostering global monetary stability, and addressing other significant economic issues like international trade and global poverty. 2. 🌍 Furthering Environmental Agenda: From addressing environmental concerns to taking solid action on climate change, the G7 Summit has pushed for a sustainable planet. As a testament to this, the Leaders' Pledge for Nature was a highlight in the 2020 G7 Summit where urgent action was pledged on tackling biodiversity, climate change, and other serious issues affecting our world. 3. 🤝 Advocating Peace & Security: Furthermore, the G7 Summit has provided a platform to assert collective stands against threats to international peace and security, facilitated productive dialogues during geopolitical crises, and on many occasions, served as a springboard to tackle issues such as terrorism, cybercrime, and nuclear disarmament. NEW: Starting today, Brazil is hosting the G20 Summit of international leaders in Rio de Janeiro. It’s a crowning diplomatic highlight of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s third presidential term. But it also lays bare several problems he is facing, both in foreign policy and Brazilian domestic politics, writes Mauricio Santoro. Lula is dealing with fierce right-wing opposition at home and has made little progress in his ambitious bid to serve as an intermediary in global conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. The summit is a marquee venue for addressing issues like inequality and hunger that are dear to Lula, and achievements like a global anti-hunger alliance could come out of this summit. In December 2024, Think Global Health, Council on Foreign Relations published my op-ed on Russia's climate change, focusing on its main directions and key actors - an approach that extends beyond a purely climate-focused strategy. I am truly grateful to David Fidler for encouraging me to expand and challenge my approach to the complex, transnational issues of Russian politics and diplomacy, especially in the context of wartime. Once again, as has often been the case, Russian leaders do not view conflict as the breakdown of diplomacy but instead as its continuation in another form. Under Russian military-political strategy, military power and national security dictate the pathways for diplomatic actions. This approach has become increasingly fierce, multifaceted, and difficult to trace within the volatile geopolitics and geoeconomics of the 21st century. https://lnkd.in/eeQapAJX
