Last week, our fantastic team from Shoalhaven attended the Community Connect South Shoalhaven Expo in Ulladulla. Next Step Facilitator Isabelle, and Chloe and Narissa from Workskills Employment Consultants showcased our incredible support for school leavers and jobseekers. The Next Step program offers a tailored, two-year pre-employment experience for school leavers aiming to kick-start their careers, while Workskills focuses on helping individuals with disability, illnesses and injuries find meaningful employment. Together, Next Step and Workskills support individuals aged 14 and above looking to identify their skills and abilities and join the workforce. School leavers and young professionals face many challenges as they transition into the work environment. These challenges include restricted employment opportunities, disparities in education between urban and rural regions affecting the employability of graduates, mismatches in skills leading to unemployment or underemployment, economic instability influencing job creation and market stability, dominance of the informal sector offering precarious employment prospects, and restricted access to professional networks impacting their job search, and discrimination based on race, gender, and socioeconomic status complicating the hiring process. Gaining employment for teenagers is tricky, especially for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Tricky, but with the right support not impossible. We encourage you to support teens to create an employability passport. This could be created using pen and paper. It might include: about me, likes, dislikes, strengths and needs. Employment is so much more than being paid.
