Over the past month, DCG produced a series of social media posts for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to participate in Child Abuse Prevention Month. Online gaming and social media platforms are a common tool for predators to contact and groom young victims. DHS provides resources for parents and caretakers to recognize the dangers and to teach youth about online safety. Together, we can create safe online spaces and nurturing environments for our young ones. Blog post: https://lnkd.in/gpTX3-CE #ChildAbusePrevention #ProtectOurChildren #BlueCampaign #CAPM #DHS

In our ever-changing digital world, safeguarding our children online has never been more crucial. Shockingly, reports of online abuse have skyrocketed over 360% in the past decade alone, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. In response, the Department of Homeland Security launched the “know2protect” campaign that’s dedicated to educating families about the escalating risks of online exploitation and abuse. The initiative features a comprehensive website and powerful PSA, shedding light on the alarming increase in online exploitation cases. The program recommends that parents implement measures such as password protection, device limits, privacy and location setting updates, and fostering open dialogue with kids. Together, we can raise awareness and take action to create a safer online environment for all. It's imperative that we arm both children and parents with knowledge to identify and prevent encounters with online predators. With technological advances come more subtle threats of abuse and trafficking, calling on us to be even more vigilant in making sure our children are always guarded and safe. Here are a few tips for you to stay alert and protect our children. Monitor all social media accounts like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat where personal information and photos can be shared with predators are disguised as “friends”. Use parental locks on video sites and monitor what videos your kids are watching. Places like YouTube, Vimeo and Twitch are where predators sometimes like to chat up children less than half their age. The “don’t talk to strangers” conversation applies even more so online. Even if someone says they’re nice or they mean no harm, your child needs to know not to talk to them. Make it a point to have ongoing discussion with your teen or tween about how important it is to stay safe and to come to you about any threat they receive or anything someone suggests that seems “off”. www.SheIsSafe.org
