❗ COMPACT ACT ❗ - Veterans and former Service Members Any Veteran – whether enrolled in VA or not – can go to a VA or non-VA emergency room for emergent suicidal care. VA will provide the treatment or cover the costs for treatment including transportation, inpatient or crisis residential care for up to 30 days, and outpatient care for up to 90 days. Who is eligible for COMPACT Act related services? Regardless of VA enrollment status, COMPACT-eligible individuals are: Former members of the armed forces who were discharged or released from active duty after more than 24 months of active service under conditions other than dishonorable. Former members of the armed forces, including reserve service members, who served more than 100 days under a combat exclusion or in support of a contingency operation either directly or by operating an unmanned aerial vehicle from another location who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Former members of the armed forces who were the victim of a physical assault of a sexual nature, a battery of a sexual nature, or sexual harassment while serving in the armed forces. While the exact cause is yet to be determined, research suggests that certain military exposures, such as environmental toxins and traumatic brain injuries, may contribute to the development of ALS. After identifying veteran suicide as its highest clinical priority, the military is making a major new push to prevent deaths by suicide, with numerous efforts underway both in the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). There is good reason for this heightened activity: For decades, suicide rates were lower among active-duty personnel than they were in the general population, but they are now about the same. Veterans, meanwhile, are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than nonveteran adults. September is Suicide Prevention Month. Data suggests that approximately 22 veterans a day die by suicide. We can do more to fight. We can read this and carry it with us year round. According to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, the military and veteran suicide rate is 50% higher than that of civilians. Growing up in the military community, here are the things I think WE can do to help: 1. Stop veteran bias. 2. Take time to listen and learn. 3. Thank our military personnel and veterans for their service!!!!!! 🎗️ 4. Forget the discount, offer the product/service for free when you can. 5. Help them make and keep their appointments. The following signs require immediate attention: Thinking about hurting or killing yourself. Looking for ways to kill yourself. Talking about death, dying, or suicide. Self-destructive behavior such as drug abuse, weapons, etc. If you notice any of these in a Veteran or Service member you know, connect them with the Veterans Crisis Line’s 24/7/365 resources: Call 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1, chat online at https://lnkd.in/eHQMyaVs, or text to 838255.
