People assume journalists choose sources who will push a specific angle or will make one side of a story look bad or good. No surprise -- this leads to people feeling like news coverage is *biased* and *unfair*. But people are LESS likely to make these assumptions if journalists get on the record about how their sourcing process works. So how can you do that? Start with these questions. 💬 How do you decide which people to quote? What gives them credibility and expertise? ✅ How do you work to be mindful of source diversity? 🔢 How many people do you interview? ❌ How do you make sure your sources don’t have conflicts of interest or hidden agendas? ⚖️ How do you work to be fair to sources, and what if you don’t hear back from them? 👤 What happens if someone doesn’t want their name published? Can they stay anonymous? We have more guidance for how you can answer these questions -- and share them back with your community -- in this Trust Kit! https://lnkd.in/eua7fp87

Having scientists willing and able to share, represent and sometimes defend their science in the media is important. Scientists sharing their work with lay audiences helps create an informed society that can make informed choices - from governments, policy makers and business leaders big decisions to individuals in their daily lives. This is especially important for climate change, health, vaccination, energy and other areas of research and innovation that are contested in the media. And sometimes talking science in the media is just plain fun! I really encourage scientists to do media training - not just because I'm one of the trainers and I love doing it, but because expert comment has never been more important. #MediaTraining #ScienceCommunication

“What other voices will be in the story?” Ask this question whenever a journalist requests an interview. Finding out who else they plan to speak with will help you determine whether their story is about YOU (your organization), or about a broader issue shared by your competitors and comparable organizations. Usually you’d prefer the latter, especially if it’s a sensitive story. If your spokesperson or organization happens to be on one side of a contentious issue in current events, this question may help you find out whether your opponents are being interviewed, and perhaps even which ones. You can prepare messaging to counter their likely arguments. Here are some other questions you should never forget to ask journalists when they call: https://lnkd.in/geUS5imS
