The Earth Prize 2024 Finalist Team Falcons shows us how fungi can enhance soil fertility in Central America! The story of Alex’s solution began when he was working at a farm in Nicaragua last summer. There, he had first-hand contact with depleted soils, a common issue many Central American farmers face due to harmful deforestation and chemical farming practices. After witnessing Juan, the farmer he was helping, worry about the lack of rain and the unaffordability of fertilizers as prices had doubled, Alex got to work to find a solution. We've been conducting a few product trials in the lead up to PRIMEX and we're pretty happy with the results. Not only will we be able to show the outcomes at the event but we will also be launching Banyula Rural. Formerly O'Grady Rural, Banyula Rural produces foliar sprays for direct application to the crops' leaves, as well as soil amendments. Foliar nutrient application allows for fast absorption. Among other things these sprays contain modified fish hydrolysate and wood vinegar, which is a byproduct of biochar. In terms of soil amendments, Banyula Rural produces fungal dominant compost extract and highly soluble carbon, to improve the biology of the soil, and feed the microorganisms therein. The goal is a cycle of constant plant, soil and ecosystem improvement. In the below trial we planted coriander and compared the impact of BEAM. 📢 Exciting News! 📢 We are thrilled to announce the publication of our latest journal article, exploring the allelopathic effects of extracts from Aloe ferox, Aloe marlothii, Anthocleista grandiflora, and Pollichia campestris on plant germination. 🌿 📚 Inspired by the traditional practices of rural farmers in South Africa, the study investigates how these plants, commonly used in crop management, can influence seed germination. Integrating beneficial microorganisms into agricultural practices offers significant potential for sustainable crop management. By leveraging their ability to control pathogens and promote plant growth, farmers can enhance crop productivity while reducing environmental impacts. The article on the following link; https://lnkd.in/dCnVz6Rs highlights how the two beneficial microorganisms, Trichoderma asperellum M2RT4 and Hypocrea lixii F3ST31 effectively combat the plant pathogen “Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fusarium wilt causal agent), which poses a serious threat to tomato crops. Additionally, these biocontrol agents enhanced the crop growth and yield by increasing the expression of defense-related genes such as TomPR1, TomPR2, TomloxC, and SWIRKY4.
