I’m so excited to be back in Dubai this week for the Economist Impact’s 4th annual Global Trade and Supply Chain Summit. This is a great opportunity to hear directly from trade, supply chain, and procurement leaders from across the world on how they are navigating supply chain pressures and challenges and preparing for what may be a very disruptive 2025. Trade policy and tariffs in particular could play a significant role in that disruption. Oliver Sawbridge will moderate a panel discussion between me, Luísa Santos, and Stephen Olson on the trade policies of U.S. Vice President Harris and former U.S. President Trump as they race to the finish line of the U.S. general election. More importantly, we will share our perspectives on what those policies mean for the global trading system and U.S. trading partners.

On 31st July 2024, the WTO launched “World Trade Statistics 2023,” an online tool displaying key global trade data for 2023. Users can view trends in trade value and volume, filter data by region or product, and see charts such as top exporters and trade growth. According to our #ScottishTechSurvey 2024, the Middle East is the only export market that increased in attractiveness for the compared to last year. As trade that is free from high tariffs, free from security risks, free from national-level competition fills the rear view mirror, global supply chains will step down to specific trade-route protection and reliance. After all, even my washing machine contains minerals from Estonia and Central Asia. Assumptions of "any low cost supply from any source at any time" will be the mark of an aged text book. Planning for the future requires the foresight to invest in long-term supply communities, including reliance on National level departments of Commerce/Trade to push Departments of State and Defense to help secure specific, strategic routes across a community of suppliers and conversion partners. If COVID taught us anything, it's that the new Supply Chain will be community based...regardless of how far the members are from one another. If your risk management is still focused on filling a database with generic, obvious risks, it is time to get help.
