I nearly forgot to do my book of the week. Late in the day, for this week I have chosen US writer Paul Auster’s novel, ‘The Book of Illusions’ (2002). Auster has written many books to much acclaim. I’ve struggled through some of his novels, and started but chosen not to finish others. It’s nothing personal: I happen not to connect with his take on the world or his way with words. The exception is ‘The Book of Illusions’, a phenomenally fine and subtle story about grief, silent films, and lost and imagined worlds: ‘We all want to believe in impossible things, I suppose, to persuade ourselves that miracles can happen. Consider that I was the author of the only book ever written on Hector Mann, it probably made sense that someone would think I’d jump at the chance to believe he was still alive.’ ‘The Book of Illusions’ is still in print, as are many of Auster’s other books.   [Note: in 2024, my creative project ‘Recommending the Future’ involves me immersing myself in, and writing back to, grey literature.
