Several Geo-roles here in case anybody from my network is interested in joining a long-term project that is independent of hydrocarbon price fluctuations.

Having been in Engineering now for 26 years this month, predominantly in Rail, Naval, Industrial locomotive, with a good mix of Nuclear, Oil and Gas sectors. Things have certainly changed in terms of experience and qualification as a ratio within Engineering. I will always say that good time-served engineers, coming from the coalface will produce a better output. This is not a dig at a modern approach to desktop engineering, but experience of building it, working out its flaws, fixing it, maintaining it is everything in how we learn to engineer better solutions for the future whilst applying modern design strategies and solutions. It takes some serious mettle to be out in a foreign country or remote site, often on your own solving real life engineering problems to build an engineer of tomorrow. Technology, however advanced, will never fix a birdseye view of an engineering problem, and time to work out a solid solution, whether it be mechanical or electrical or a mixture of both disciplines. I would urge any young budding engineers, to leave their nests and get stuck in realtime, especially when against the clock on a major deadline. My point of this post, is to ensure, that our time served seniors take time to show every aspect of technical delivery at the point of application. We have an immense duty upon us, to ensure that our engineers of the future understand that it takes serious effort and application very often to keep our designed and problem solving systems working. Get out, get dirty... It is Engineering, and a very rewarding career....

SMRs, newbuild, long term operation – there are so many challenges for the nuclear industry today. Talking about new nuclear projects we should remember there is a gap between concept of a new plant and its realization in metal and concrete. To be surmounted this gap requires involving of hundreds of engineers. These engineers shall be experiences and well organized. As we can see from recent projects it is practically impossible to build quickly an effective new nuclear project team from scratch. For elaboration of a good concept of a new plant you need just few highly skilled creative professionals. A basic design (depending on the requirements and complexity) can be implemented by the team of about 100-200 well experienced engineers during two years. However, for detail design you will need hundreds of designers and project managers. In reality there are not a lot of experienced NPP designers in the world, just because not so many project were realized during passed decades and most of those who participated in that few buildings are not usually motivated to leave their companies. To everybody who has a nice conceptual design and going to launch a new phase for it, who is planning a new nuclear building or renovation of the existing plant I would recommend to pay attention to services provided by Framatome.
