The Erdős Institute is a multi-university collaboration that helps PhDs get rewarding jobs in industry and off-loads non-academic professional development mentorship from graduate school programs. Erdős provides fully remote training (e.g. data science and deep learning boot camps, mini-courses and study groups in topics such as data visualization, quantum computing, software engineering for data scientists, etc.) taught by former academics for current academics, career exploration seminars, one-on-one career coaching, behavioral and technical interview preparation workshops, employer and Erdős alumni career connections, and job postings. Participation is free for graduate students and academics affiliated with our academic member institutions. Tuition otherwise costs $500/individual for first time participants unaffiliated with our member institutions, and $25/month for Erdős Alumni. We strongly encourage applicants from non-member institutions to reach out to their advisor/postdoc mentor, department, college, graduate school, and/or university for funding support. Departments often have professional development, conference, or travel funds that they are willing to use for this purpose. We also write letters of support for faculty who wish to write Erdős professional development support into their grant applications. 🎓 Exciting Exploration in Student Degree Selection 📊 🚀 Exciting News! I'm thrilled to share the completion of our "Data Science" project at Air University, focused on "Autonomy in Degree Selection." This project was a collaborative effort with an incredible team: 👥 Meet the Team: [Syed Ayan] [Ahsan Khalil .] [Maaz Raja] 🎓 Our study, conducted at an Air university, spanned 770 participants, primarily targeting first-semester students. 🔍 We delved deep into understanding why students choose their respective degree programs by analyzing factors like personal interest, parental influence, financial considerations, confidence level, prestige of the degree/university, information-gathering methods, and the impact of potential earnings. 🎓💼 📝 Collaborating with psychologists, we designed a unique survey featuring 16 questions. By incorporating both Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and open-ended queries, we aimed for a comprehensive analysis of student perspectives. This innovative approach goes beyond the limitations of generic survey tools, ensuring a rich dataset that provides nuanced insights. 📈📚 🌈 Powerful Insight: Our analysis revealed a compelling correlation – students who chose their degree based on personal interest exhibited an exceptional level of confidence in their chosen programs. This underscores the importance of aligning passion with academic pursuits. 📑 Future Plans: We're now gearing up to translate our insights into a research paper, aiming to contribute valuable perspectives to the broader academic community.  🔍Python and Excel are our trusty tools for data analysis, providing nuanced insights. 🚀 Special thanks to Professor [Muhammad Anwaar Khalid], our guiding force and instructor for this insightful course. What a journey 💐 I am now a proud computer science graduate with a focus on software engineering. These past years have been an incredible time of exploration and learning, thanks to the unwavering support of my friends, lecturers, and various educational experiences. Throughout my time at Kenyatta University, I have been fortunate to make wonderful friends from a variety of fields. I've connected with lawyers, teachers, nutritionists, doctors, and more. Building a diverse network has been invaluable for both personal and professional growth, teaching me the importance of collaboration and the richness that comes from diverse perspectives. During my studies, I have honed my skills in system design, data structures, logical thinking, and database management. Additionally, I delved into areas such as software development, machine learning, and project management. Each unit and project has equipped me with a robust skill set that I am eager to apply in the real world. I firmly believe that by sharing our knowledge, we can use our skills to make the world a better place. One of the most impactful courses I took was Artificial Intelligence. It taught me that every solution and action we implement should leave the world in a better state than it was before. This principle has deeply influenced my approach to problem-solving and innovation. Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the connections I've made and the knowledge I've gained. The experiences have not only prepared me for a career in software engineering but have also enriched my understanding of how interconnected our world is. Hey LinkedIn fam! 👋 I wanted to share a little update with all of you wonderful folks. As some of you may already know, I've taken the plunge and dove back into the world of academia to pursue my computer science degree. 🎓 It's been three weeks in, and let me tell you, the motivation is still going strong! 💪 Even though I'm just dipping my toes into the introductory waters, I'm already picking up some invaluable skills. One of my favorites so far? Engaging in informative discussions - who knew computer science could be so chatty? 😄 Now, with only one class on my plate this term, I've found myself with a surplus of time. So, what's a motivated learner to do? Dive into more courses, of course! 📚 I'm leveraging every resource at my disposal to fast-track my degree process and soak up as much knowledge as humanly possible. 💡 But hey, let's not forget to balance, right?⚖️ While I'm on the hunt for the perfect opportunity to put my budding skills to use, I'm also making sure to carve out some me-time. So, here is a short storyline of mine, starting when I decided to do something for my career beyond academics in my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. This post might sound corny and cringe, but I wanted to share it anyway :) 2020 : I selected B. Com in my undergraduate degree application form, thinking it stood for Bachelor's in Computer. It's not because I was so dumb, but the fact that I'm from a Biology background and had no idea what Computer Science actually is. Afraid of being left behind just because I was from a Biology background in school, I joined a local computer center to learn some software stuff that I had never learned before. 2022 : Fueled with overconfidence out of nowhere, I participated in symposiums and paper presentations, where I was awarded with a sack of demotivation and insult. *Anyways, I won't blame them, because when I now think about those presentations I did, I go like, "Eww, man! Where did you get those guts to speak such stupidity in the name of a presentation? ;) "* 2023: Self-realization and self-esteem hit, brought down to earth, sat back as a humbled guy, and started to learn the essential and fundamental skills first. 2024: I chose a college which I never intended to choose and a Master's discipline which I never wanted to pursue. It all just happened. But, Alhamdulillah (All praise to the Lord), the fact is, the present me is the person I always wanted to be, learning and doing things that I once felt I should have been good at.
