I firmly believe that safety is a culture that begins with every individual buying into the idea that they have a role to play. Simply putting up posters or using fancy acronyms is not enough to drive this culture; it ultimately comes down to behavior. I am committed to not turning a blind eye to safety, even when I am a customer, because every individual's safety matters to me. I often find myself reflecting on the purpose of all of these events and awards within our industry. While recognition is important, I can’t help but wonder if we’re focusing too much on promoting our profession rather than sharing the true impact we’re making on improving safety. There are certainly many passionate and dedicated professionals among us, but it’s worth considering why this obvious self-promotion seems so prevalent (especially within these pages pre or post an event or award ceremony). Few other professions seem to promote this volume of events or awards. Yet, despite all this, we haven’t seen the safety improvements we’ve been aiming for, for nearly a decade. In many sectors, statistics show little change and many even show increases in work-related incidents. We're continually calling out for change, and new approaches, programs, studies, papers and acronyms seem to appear almost daily. But are we addressing the core problem? Perhaps the most influential change lies not in the next big initiative, but in self-reflection and a refocus of our efforts toward the very intent of our remit—connecting with those at risk and working 'with' them, to keep them even safer at work."
