🏭 The #ZHyRON project addresses the challenges in the steel industry, working to develop a new route for the recycling of steelmaking by-products.
The project’s goal is to create a hydrogen-based method for recycling iron-rich and zinc-containing steelmaking by-products, in order to:
🌀Produce Direct Reduced Iron for reuse in Electric Arc Furnaces
🌀Produce zinc-rich materials for valorization, such as in the zinc smelting industry
🌀Efficiently treat effluent for proper disposal or reuse
🌀Address all stages of the process, from waste conditioning to zinc recovery
🌀Optimize the hydrogen-based reduction process using multi-physics models
🌀Assess environmental performance through a sustainable monitoring framework
🌀Facilitate upscaling to commercial levels through conceptual integration

Green steel, which is made from iron ore using green hydrogen for direct reduction to iron metal, (which is then fed with scrap to an electric arc furnace to make steel) is a no regret use of any green hydrogen we think we can afford.
That 50% of the production of the future H2 Green Steel plant has already been signed up for, is very exciting. However, this amounts to corporate charity, and I fear that the scale of charitable steel purchasing is too small to move the needle on GHG emissions for steel. A working project at scale will be a huge help to convince others, but we still need the carbon taxes and emissions bans and carbon tariffs in place to make green steel a "thing" at scale.
Note that hydrogen in this case is used as a chemical reducing agent, not as a fuel.
Building the world’s first giga-scale green steel plant brings a lot of challenges! Despite that, we have made remarkable progress since our founding just three years ago. Here’s a glimpse:
💥 Not only was our fundraising the largest globally in 2023 (Open AI was #2), but we also raised this incredible amount – €6.5 billion – faster than any other company has before.
💥 We also broke a permit record! We secured the full environmental permit for our Boden plant in under 1.5 years.
💥 We have already sold about 50% of our initial production volumes. By doing this, we have established a market for green steel together with our customers.
💥 We’ve inked agreements with key stakeholders, including iron ore and electricity suppliers, and technology partners.
💥 Considerable groundwork has been accomplished at our 270-hectare plant, and now building columns are erected for both our DRI-tower and steel mill.
The booth looks fantastic! Great work The Euclid Chemical Company
