Who said concrete has little tensile strength? Luka Zevnik and his team has created a new type of cementitious material, combining UHPC, carbon fiber and carbon reinforcement mesh. The video shows the amazing results that have been achieved. As can be seen, a load of approximately 150 kg, dynamic, was applied on a 1 m long test strip with a thickness of 16 mm over a width of 0.1 m. The "beam" thus created has a section of only 16 cm2 and was able to withstand the load without cracks appearing. It is a truly extraordinary result that opens up the possibility of previously unimaginable applications. What do you think? We continue our dive into “Forecasting the Life of a Mass Concrete Structure” with this second and final portion of the article. Throughout the project with SI and the Fermilab Long Baseline Neutrino Facility, we set out to forecast the future life of their structure using advanced capabilities in analysis and the actual life of the concrete structure while considering the construction process, a 50-year planned cycle of life, and how these influence planning for structural monitoring systems. Our team observed the performance of a unique tubular mass concrete structure under complex thermal loading and thermal expansion. During this process, the facility contended with massive heat, an active nitrogen cooling system to remove energy, and shielding necessary for the surrounding environment. Armed with the knowledge gained from record drawings, visual inspection, and non-destructive examination, SI was able to predict the life of Fermilab’s new and old concrete structures and provide key insights into the future behavior of the structures.
