Chief Strategy Officer @ Freightos Group (#CRGO) | Expert in Global Freight, Technology & Strategic Planning | Helping Leaders Drive Global Logistics and Digital Transformation
Enjoyed chatting with Ben Ames from DC Velocity about the current #redsea ocean shipping crisis. We discussed rate and equipment impacts, the difference between this #suezcanal disruption vs. the #evergiven (hint: COVID-19), and planning for future disruptions in #oceanfreight. Give it a listen at: https://lnkd.in/e7pY6N6
Listen at https://lnkd.in/e7pY6N6 Ships crossing the Red Sea are under threat of attack by militant groups responding to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The situation is constraining global trade. Many shipping lines are bypassing the Suez Canal, instead sailing around Africa to reach Europe and North America, resulting in huge increases in costs for shippers. Freightos chief strategy officer Ian Arroyo tells us more. Many previous assumptions about global trade foundations are just not valid any longer, and for an undetermined period of time. Alongside geopolitical complexities and climate-driven changes to navigable waterways, this will force further localization of production and a retooling of inventory management practices. GLDPartners' forward deployment logistics assumptions and planning baked into the US TradePort Corridor system is going to be more pertinent than was thought when we launched the project system plan with USDOT and the Build America Bureau back in 2018. With all of the uncertainties in today's world, the idea of integrated super high-efficiency corridors and TradePort hubs is more important than ever.

The issues facing the Suez Canal are geopolitical, while those in Panama are climate-related. However, both are significantly disrupting global trade. Cargo volumes passing through the Suez and Panama canals have plummeted by over a third. Hundreds of vessels have been forced to take longer routes, leading to delivery delays, increased transportation costs, and economic upheaval for local communities. #Trade #Shipping #SuezCanal #RedSea #Supplychain #Cost #Uncertainty https://lnkd.in/dkGv_Q9b

"The Suez’s problems are geopolitical and those in Panama are climate-based, but both are roiling global trade. Cargo volumes through the Suez and Panama canals have plunged by more than a third. Hundreds of vessels have diverted to longer routes, resulting in delivery delays, higher transportation costs and economic wreckage for local communities. Ship operators are bracing for months of uncertainty in the waterways where some 18% of global trade volumes crossed last year. The Panama Canal is in the midst of one of the driest periods in the artificial waterway’s century of operation. Officials hope the drought, which started in mid-2023, will let up at the end of the dry season in May." It's more than just #cargotheft that affects #supplychainsecurity. Although the delays and resultant chokepoints will result in ripe targets for thieves, especially those practicing large scale #pilferge. A potential blockade of #Taiwan would be yet another major 🔧 wrench in the ⚙ gears. #OSINT #ContextualIntelligence #supplychain #supplychainvisibility #supplychainriskmanagement #supplychaindisruption

These are also indicators of what can happen with any choke point, including routes that pass through the Taiwan Strait, areas of the South China Sea, the Straits of Malacca, and so on. Ocean traffic is critical to trade, economic security, food security, and more.

How 27 vessels moved roughly 59 million barrels of oil since 2023, according to The New York Times Tankers were mainly involved in a practice known as “spoofing” in which vessels broadcast fake route information to hide their true locations. In other cases, tankers conducted ship-to-ship transfers, exchanging goods with another vessel at sea. To detect irregularities in the AIS paths that may be signs of deceptive practices, The New York Times used data on spoofing ships provided by Spire Maritime. 🔍 To read more about the investigation: https://nyti.ms/4bKU4Ek #SpireMaritime #MaritimeData #NewYorkTimes #NYT #Spire #AISdata

The Cook Islands has surpassed Gabon to become the world’s fastest growing registry in 2024, as the Pacific island nation embraces the rapidly expanding business niche of flagging elderly, anonymously owned Russia-trading tankers amid tighter sanctions scrutiny from Western regulators. Once best known for flagging yachts, the Cook Islands has added more tankers over 20,000 dwt this year to its fleet than the Liberia and Marshall Islands, the world’s largest- and third-largest registries, and is only surpassed by Panama, the second-largest. Fifty tankers over 20,000 dwt, totalling 7.2m dwt, joined the Cook Islands registry between January 1-July 23, Lloyd's List Intelligence data shows, more than doubling its size in seven months https://lnkd.in/gbMC3m_N
