The SNG Grant Thornton Africa Directors’ Development Proganme run by Henley Business School - Africa has to be one of the most valuable investments that my employer has made in its leaders. My take aways from the Programme continue to have a daily impact on how I show up as a leader, and my coach Mojalefa Daniel Maluka reminded me of the importance of ‘sharing notes’. Today I’d like to share some of my reflections on leading in a time of complexity - specifically on the five leadership mindtraps, which if not noticed/ acknowledged and unlocked may affect our ability to lead well in complexity. (It was Sonja Blignaut who introduced us to this body of work) 1. Simple stories Our desire for simple stories prevents us from truly interacting with the real one. We are blinded by stereotypes, and we insist on alignment between the present story and our past experiences. It is important that we become open to engage with the complex real and current story. 2. Rightness We absolutely love to FEEL right; we would rather rest on our false certainty than challenge our entrenched beliefs. Jennifer Garvey Berger writes that ‘Just because it feels rights doesn’t mean it is right’. We must have the willingness to challenge our own beliefs, and instead of listening to win or fix during our interactions - we should aim to listen to learn. 3. Agreement Our longing for agreement and consensus robs us of fantastic ideas. We fail to recognise that conflict may serve us effectively in deepening our relationships. Divergence is okay, it provides us the opportunity to be presented with multiple sets of solutions and expand possibilities. 4. Control When we don’t feel or appear to be in control, we fear that we are not leading. But in fact, insisting on taking control robs us of the opportunity to influence. Instead of always seeking to be in control, we should rather strive to influence. Ask ‘how can I help enable’ rather than ‘how can I cause’? 5. Ego. When we are set on protecting our current identities, we avoid growth. We become shackled to who we are now and never truly reach for future better versions of ourselves. I highly recommend “Unlocking Leadership Mindtraps: How to thrive in complexity”. Jennifer Garvey Berger unpacks the five leadership mindtraps in this book, in such beautiful depth, and also provides multiple proposed keys to unlocking and escaping them.

"Executive Fellow and Associate Professor of Practice | Speaker, Lecturer, Facilitator, and Business Consultant"
I attended an excellent session on positive leadership at Henley Africa earlier this week and at our table we had a discussion about the obsession with immediate results in so many organisations. I remember a number of people I reported to in my life saying to me: You are only as good as your next result Frans, always remember that and make that result at all costs. We can pick up the pieces in the next six months. And it’s the ‘at all costs’ that becomes the problem. We have all seen organisations reducing the scheduling of people who are crucial for the customer experience to save costs, and it inevitably leads to a reduction in motivation and sales. Another senior manager said to me: Never tell people they are doing well, they will ask for more money and it will cost you your result. ( Another lesson here: while listening is imperative, do not believe everything senior management tells you, always verify, always do your own research and read and read.) Reward people in the best way you can, and move away from rewarding immediate results. And make the work experiences worthwhile with purpose., vision, inspiration and motivation. It is not about the next result, but about the results for the coming decades. It is about the value that is added while making results. It is about shared value. Upliftment of people and communities, thriving people and communities ensure thriving businesses. At times we have to sacrifice an immediate result, because we are investing for numerous good results in the future. Put the ego away for a while and consider the future.

Serving on boards comes with a lot of responsibility and accountability. Continuous personal development is crucial for a #NED that believes in the value of such a role. Being part of a #NED network is extremely beneficial where professional advice can be sourced and discussed. Earlier this week I joined fellow inspiring business leaders in London for the certificate ceremony of the #NED Stepping Stones Program, led by Transpire - Global Director Network. Key takeaways: - Never assume: Probing and posing the right questions to avoid jumping into the wrong conclusions is critical. - Speak your mind: A value for everyday-life which is accentuated in the Boardroom. As a NED one must speak their mind and not be influenced by the rest of the board members on a decision that one feels strongly about. #director #governance Tony Stubbs FCA, FRSA Neil Baines-Thomas ACC Simon Burke Dorota Ferguson Simon Minett Frank Parrotto
