Last Tuesday, June 11th, we had 14 volunteers join us from our partnerships with Keep Omaha Beautiful, the Old Market Association, the Dubliner, and of course, our own team from The Farnam. We all took one hour out of our work days to give back to our community to help make Omaha a tiny bit more beautiful just in time for College World Series of Omaha, Inc. guests. In just one hour, we collected 12 bags of trash, totaling 54.17 lbs. of waste! While this may not seem very impactful, the vast majority of what our team picked up included hundreds of cigarette butts, wedged between sidewalk cracks and bricks in the Old Market streets. By dedicating time to volunteer, we’re not just improving the appearance of our neighborhoods; we’re also making a significant impact on the environment, promoting community pride, and demonstrating our commitment to keeping our surroundings clean. This simple act also fosters a sense of teamwork and responsibility, showing that we care about where we live and work. We are so proud to call Omaha our home and we all left looking forward to the next opportunity to make it a little more beautiful!

MORE IN COMMON THAN DIFFERENT It was a Friday in Arizona, and the conference had wrapped up for the day. I decided to take a rare trip to the hotel hot tub and found myself surrounded by a group of people with strong opinions. After a while, I engaged the only other person sitting silently. As soon as he spoke, I could tell he wasn’t from California. That was twenty years ago, and Charlie is still my friend. Charlie shared that he was from a tiny town in Mississippi. He clearly loved Winona and his students. Like me at the time, Charlie was a principal. A casual observer might have thought the similarities ended there. I was in Laguna Beach, with an ocean view from my office and some of the most expensive property in the country. Charlie told me about his town and their challenges. We seemed to be from different worlds. I joked that our students should stop visiting different countries to learn about people when our two schools could just visit each other for a cultural experience. A few minutes later, we both reached the obvious next step. We had to set up a two-way exchange. I took our Laguna Beach kids to Winona, and Charlie brought his kids to Laguna Beach. They took us into the woods to ride ATVs and then to the Egg Bowl (football game between Mississippi State and Ole Miss). We took them into the ocean to ride stand-up paddle boards and to Disneyland. Our kids mirrored each other in classes, stayed in houses with host parents, and talked deep into the nights. Charlie and I learned as much or more than the students. The single biggest takeaway is that kids are kids, teachers are teachers, parents are parents, administrators are administrators, and communities love their schools. With a laundry list of things that were different, the things that were the same dominated the experience. We knew we hit gold when the kids became lifelong friends like the two of us. We also learned that, like California, Mississippi made things more complicated than necessary. The simple approach always wins. The priority goals for both of us were not far apart. The starting points were different. In some cases, the scales tipped to Laguna Beach. In other regards, Winona was the clear winner. We learned from Charlie and his kids. I think they also learned from their experience with us. It was truly beautiful. I believe it’s crucial to consider that human nature drives us to seek out people and situations that resemble us closely. That’s a mistake. Often, the most powerful learning comes from different people in similar spaces. SimpleWins is for everyone. The size or location of a school district is largely irrelevant. If you have students, schools, goals, and a need for structured mentoring, SimpleWins is for you. Now, I owe Charlie a call! #simplewins #education #edchat #superintendents #principals #administrators #continuingeducation #consulting #coaching

The town hall was a great success! (admittedly, we’re biased, but we thought so). There was coffee, music, books, and a healthy dose of civic engagement. It was the beginning of a movement to solve the housing crisis. Upward Community is driven by a growing team of volunteers. We are grocers, teachers, stay-at-home moms, food servers, veterans, retirees, and a civil engineer. We represent the majority of any community and seek a pathway to homeownership for the workforce because we know it’s the solution to a multitude of issues. Think traffic, public safety, mental health, classism, racism, all the isms - these issues are markedly improved by secure homes. UC is political, but we’re not politicians. We don’t want your money or your vote. We’ll align with candidates and elected officials who share our mission, not for political favor, but to benefit the local workforce. Our only ask is that you volunteer some of your time and energy to help us solve the biggest social, political, and economic issue of our time (not to sound melodramatic, but it’s true). Please like, comment, and share. And see you at the next town hall! 🤩🌷🏠

This! This important & what my doctoral work is about: equitable access to the outdoors because all kids need it! Please consider filling out the form
A few weeks ago, I shared the post below. Today, I received a response from my Senator with reassurance that she was fighting for this bill which its currently sitting with the US Senate. It reminded me yet again how amazing the REI Cooperative Action Network is in driving meaningful change. In less than 1 min, the form allowed me to submit a response to my local representatives to fight for a bill that I am passionate about-- access to green space at school for children. Her follow up today was reassuring to me that our local reps are paying attention on the other end and that my voice matters. (+ it's true: brands can be a vessel for action!) Original post: For many kids, the nearest outdoor space is at school. Yet, in many cases, there is little to no green space at school, leaving children little to no access to nature. Many schools across the country have become cement playgrounds. The Living School Yards Act, if passed, will provide grants to schools and districts to transform schoolyards into dynamic outdoor learning environments. The benefit for children is profound: 1. Growing healthy foods, trees and plants 2. Conserving water, creating wildlife habitat 3. Providing children with opportunities to observe and immerse in nature 4. Improving mental health with more time outside 5. Improving shade coverage for weather changes 6. Creating safer space to play, create, imagine, be Access to green space is a privilege and it shouldn't be. REI's Cooperative Action Network makes it easy for you to have a voice. It takes 30 seconds to help pass this bill by signing you name. Join me.
