The Field Engineer community blog today meets Uchenna Odinukwe, MNSE, HSE, PMP who works for JMG Limited and is a specialist on industrial air compressors, air dryers, air compressor boosters, and air conditioners. At JMG he supports compressors from KAESER KOMPRESSOREN / Kaeser Compressors USA . He has also supported Atlas Copco compressors in a previous role. Uchenna's father was a Civil Engineer and had seven sons, of whom three are engineers (two mechanical and one electrical and electronic). Uchenna always knew that he would follow in his father’s footsteps and become an engineer too. 🙂 . 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈? The last phase of a construction project is the commissioning phase, where the subsystems are integrated together to form the desired plant process, and tested as a system to verify project specification requirements are met. The term commissioning refers to the activities from the point in the project when construction is complete (or equipment is installed) until the equipment is placed into service and handed over to the Owner’s operations team for continued operation and maintenance. As construction is completed and equipment installation is complete, the construction and commissioning teams will perform a walkthrough to identify any contract deviations or deficiencies, and list all items on a deficiency tracking list. Deficiencies are then classified as Type-A, Type-B, or Type-C, identifying when each must be complete. Type-A is a showstopper, and must be complete before proceeding to the next activity. Type-B does not need to be addressed immediately and does not impact subsequent activities, but must be rectified prior to handover to the owner. Type-C deficiencies are minor defects and are agreed by the owner to be rectified after handover to the owner. For mechanical systems, pre-commissioning activities consist of cleaning and flushing of pipes, pressure testing, and leak testing. Any rotating equipment such as a pump are bump tested, which means rotating for the first time on site to verify current draw, pressure, and flow rates. There may be an initial run-in period of motors and pumps to verify vibration and heating/cooling as well as confirm no infant mortality issues. Following completion of pre-commissioning checklists, commissioning can begin. Commissioning is the on-site process to verify that equipment has not been damaged during shipping since the FAT was completed. All field devices are installed at this point, so field wiring is confirmed to be correct, and a subset of FAT tests are repeated to ensure the equipment can communicate to all field devices and that equipment is calibrated. You have just begun a new job as a maintenance engineer in a petrochemical facility and are responsible for large critical rotating equipment. Your facility contains vent gas compressors which are generally reliable but do fail on occasion. The system consists of three compressors in parallel with piping that appears inadequate on both the suction and discharge. The compressors have had a remarkable number of valve failures and, on occasion, some instrumentation connections have broken off. You have questioned the staff about the operation and discovered that many studies have been performed and that the design contains pulsation bottles on the suction and discharge to “snuff” out any acoustical driven vibration problems......

As usual, I like to deliver any useful information that I gained to my colleagues in the Mechanical field. This is my experience during the last four months which was a very useful and incredibly helpful experience to me. You can find the headlines of the report as follows: A) Pipelines: 1- Defects of pipeline. 2- Solution of the defects. 3- Pipe isolation. 4- Hydrostatic pressure Testing of pipelines. B) Gas & Oil Separation Process: 1- GOSPs Components. 2- GOSPs Process. 3- Safety Devices for gas H2S. C) Critical Equipment that you should know when you in the Line Maintenance: 1- Basic valve types . 2- Relief Valves/ Safety Valves. 3- Basic Bearing types. 3- Shaft Alignment. D) Some information of Reliability & Maintenance Engineering (قطرة في بحر): 1- Lubrication Condition Monitoring (LCM). 2- Switchover of Rotation Equipment.
