Without emergency training, our understanding of emergency procedures is inaccurately influenced by what we see in the media. We don’t know what we don’t know what we don’t know until our knowledge is challenged, either by a real-life scenario or in a class. One of the biggest misconceptions we’ve noticed over years of teaching CPR and other life-saving skills are the misconceptions surrounding rescue breaths. They’re best given at a certain cadence, in specific situations, and with the use of chest compressions, but they’re not always needed. CPR and AED Awareness Week The 3 Steps to Save a Life: 1. Call 911 and get the AED: If someone experiences cardiac arrest or collapses, call 911 immediately and get an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) nearby. 2. Start CPR: Begin CPR using the chest compression technique, (30 compressions to 2 breaths) if you are trained and able to do so. This will help keep oxygen flowing to the brain and other vital organs. 3. Use an AED: Once the AED is ready, use it to deliver an electric shock to the person's heart, if necessary.
