Through The SMEP Programme, the Flipflopi Project has established a plastic waste management system currently reaching 70% of Lamu archipelago’s population, where we collect and handle recyclable plastics within a circular economy model. From the plastic waste, we produce traditional furniture and artisanal boats, preserving heritage craftsmanship and generating economic opportunities. However, hard to recycle and low-quality plastic products and packaging are on the rise due to their affordability, and compound the challenge of disparate waste management systems. The complexity of the problem requires a systemic approach that tackle’s the issue from every angle. Together with ALN Kenya | Anjarwalla & Khanna we believe effective legislation that is regional in approach provides a critical step forward in enabling the transition to a circular economy. The Draft Bill calling for an end to specific unnecessary SUPs within the East African Community is gaining ground after convening members of parliament from 7 East African countries who were in unanimous agreement for a regional approach.
