Black Histories & Futures Month is February! Since 1976, every U.S. President has officially recognized Black History Month, but its origins date back to 1915, thanks to historian Carter G. Woodson. In 2015, the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) introduced Black Futures Month, offering a modern lens on this annual observance. This month is a time to honor Black history, reflect on the resilience of Black communities, and envision a future rooted in justice and liberation. At UpStart, we proudly celebrate both Black histories and Black futures, amplifying the strength and contributions of the Black community. Today marks the start of Black History Month in the UK! This October, we celebrate Black History Month by emphasizing the importance of correcting historical inaccuracies and highlighting untold success stories. This year, Black History Month is about reclaiming control of Black stories and honoring the complexity and richness of Black heritage. As we reflect on the achievements of Black people, we must also recognize the need to challenge and dismantle the historical narratives that have marginalized their contributions. By amplifying their voices and celebrating their impact, we honor the full spectrum of their leadership and pave the way for future generations to thrive. Let’s use this month to not only acknowledge the past but actively work toward a future where Black voices and stories are fully recognized and celebrated. #blackhistorymonth #bhm24 #reclaimingnarratives #blackstories

Black History Month, a celebration of Black history, culture and education, kicks off on Feb. 1. Founded nearly a century ago, without any proclamation from the government, celebrations won't be affected by the Trump administration's efforts to curb DEI initiatives. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History releases a theme for each year. This year’s theme is African Americans and Labor. The organization plans to use the month, and the rest of the year, focusing on the role of Black labor in building the nation through industry or community work.
