Another #myth about #PR - in the #CzechRepublic, there is the term ‘tiskova mluvci’ and in the most general of terms, it means that this person is the public face for a brand or a political group, etc. But in fact, the term ‘publicist’ has evolved - at least #internationally - where the person (the #publicist) still builds and ‘preserves’ the #publicimage of a brand or an individual, but it is done more from ‘behind the scenes’. I am usually the one telling CEOs what to do and what to say during interviews … I am the planner / the coordinator, so to speak. I am sparingly on camera … unless of course, we are doing in-house videos … then the PR person is ALWAYS (I can guarantee that) the first person to be on camera 😅🤓 My other favorite myths about PR: -PR stands for ‘press release’ - PR equals being a ‘publisher’ - in the US I was repeatedly asked what books I published 📚 What’s yours? After two years of living in Australia, I have experienced my fair share of brands and organisations treating Aotearoa like a baby Australia. It will come as no surprise that this approach has very little cut through among Kiwis because, as we constantly have to remind the rest of the world, we are not in fact Australian. Managing Backlash to Brilliance: Let's Learn from #Casemiro's Wife, Annamariana, Turning the Tide with PR Intervention In a stunning turn of events, yesterday's Manchester United vs. Liverpool match at Old Trafford took an unexpected turn - and it wasn't just the 3-0 scoreline. Midfielder Casemiro faced a social media firestorm for his performance, trending on X, but his wife had the perfect response to calm the storm - countering negative publicity about her husband. In the midst of a social media storm, Annamariana stepped in to defend her husband's reputation with a powerful yet silent message. By sharing a photo of his 30+ trophies, she masterfully shifted the narrative from a single poor performance to his impressive career achievements. This is a great example of effective PR and crisis management. By countering negative publicity with past positive achievements, she redeemed her husband's image and reminded the public of his worth and legendary status. Karen Kerr joined RS 11 years ago and is our Vice President of Group Communications. We caught up with her to discuss what life has been like working in our business for over a decade. Hi Karen, what does a typical day look like as the VP of Group Comms? Karen: Just as you would probably expect in Communications, no two days are ever the same. As a team we look after the communications to people both inside and outside of our business. Our job is to inform, engage and inspire people to become champions of RS by sharing a consistent story of who we are and what we aspire to be. And so, it really depends on what’s on our plan for the week, or what urgent thing has cropped up which might need immediate attention. Whether I’m working at home, in our London or Corby offices, or elsewhere, the day has to start with a nice coffee and if home, a very early walk with the dog to set me up for the day. What is your favourite thing about working at RS? Karen: When I originally got approached for the role at RS, I had no idea who they were, but everyone I met through the process inspired and excited me, and still over 10 years on I’m still loving my job and the contribution I make to the business. It’s a very special business with clear ambitions, an enormous opportunity, and incredible people – that’s what has kept me here so long and wanting to do my very best for the business. Do you have any stand-out memories from your time with RS? Karen: A recent huge highlight for me was the launch of our company values. As we’ve grown as a business, we didn’t have a consistent way to describe how we wanted working at RS Group to feel. Now we do! Created over a year with input from thousands of our people around the world, our RS values set out how to work in a consistent way – no matter what you do or where you are. They will help us to deliver our strategy more effectively and make RS a really great place to work for everyone.
