Revolutionizing Robotics: The Self-Organising Nervous System (SoNS) Researchers at Université Libre de Bruxelles have developed a groundbreaking swarm robotics architecture inspired by human neural networks — the Self-Organising Nervous System (SoNS). This innovative system allows robots to dynamically self-organise into sub-swarms, optimizing collaboration for tasks such as sensing, movement, and mission planning. Acting as a middleware, SoNS blends centralized and self-organized control, enabling robots to adjust roles in real-time hierarchies. By allowing robots to communicate with nearby peers, the system minimizes bottlenecks while ensuring a perfect balance between individual and collective behaviors. Tested with up to 250 robots, SoNS enhances scalability, flexibility, and fault tolerance, paving the way for more efficient and adaptable robotic systems. A giant leap forward in swarm robotics! #SwarmRobotics #AI #RoboticsInnovation #TechResearch #AIinRobotics #Automation #FutureOfRobotics #updates #ChipIOT

We are thrilled to announce the publication of our paper, "SNGNN2D-v2: A GNN-Based Model for the Generation of Human-Aware Cost Maps in Dynamic Environments," in the prestigious International Journal of Social Robotics! This work, co-authored by Dr Pilar Bachiller, Dr Luis Vicente Calderita, Dr Luis J. Manso, and myself, marks the culmination of the SNGNN series, focusing on cost maps for human-aware robot navigation. Efficient navigation in dynamic environments populated by humans remains challenging for mobile robots. Balancing effective pathfinding with minimizing social disruption is crucial. Cost maps, combining information from various sources, offer interpretable solutions. This paper introduces SNGNN2D-v2, a graph neural network model designed to capture social interactions and respond to dynamic elements in human-populated environments to generate human-aware cost maps. We evaluate SNGNN2D-v2 through real-robot deployments, complex simulations, and comparisons with other approaches. The results demonstrate SNGNN2D-v2's effectiveness for human-aware cost map generation, paving the way for more human-friendly robots. 1966, Shakey shaked the world. When everything is going about AI. Have you ever wondered about the first AI based mobile robot? Let’s talk about it. Charles Rosen with his team at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) invented Shakey, the world’s first mobile robot. A huge box on the wheels, with a TV camera, an antenna radio link, detectors and bumpers. It could ↪ Combined camera and sensor data to detect obstacles and navigate. ↪ Move around, avoiding obstacles, finding optimal paths. ↪ Made decisions based on surroundings and tasks. ↪Recognize and find objects, and move them. ↪Plan steps to complete tasks. Now retired Shakey resides at Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. Shakey laid the foundation of today’s advanced robotics and AI.
