In Africa government funding for civil society is low, unpredictable and at times non-existent. The fight for social justice for instance advocacy against commercial determinants of health requires strategic investments in budget advocacy and funding for non-governmental organizations (NGOs). #HealthEquity #BudgetAdvocacy #NGOFunding #SocialJustice #Africa
➡ Eurocare’s Secretary General, Florence Berteletti, stated in the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 Conference “Future EU Health Union” that it is critical that the European Commission increases the funding for health NGOs. 🗣 Funding shortages jeopardize our very existence, impeding our ability to tackle the Commercial Determinants of Health, that is, the influence of the alcohol, tobacco, and food industries. We cannot allow industry lobbyists to obstruct public health initiatives by blocking or delaying legislative proposals! 💡 Thus, it is essential that funding enables us to conduct legislative advocacy work, rather than constraining us to focus on projects only. #AlcoholRightToKnow

Today is #EuropeanHormoneDay, a key date for the European and global endocrine community to celebrate their achievements while rising up to ever changing challenges and opportunities to improve endocrine wellbeing. This year will again focus on #EndocrineDisruptingChemicals (EDCs) in an effort to keep this topic high on the European and national health agenda during a time when important policies and legislation, including the revision of #REACH - Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, have been put on hold.

The Health Consumer Advocacy Alliance are calling for more research on preventable medical harm in New Zealand. The little research we do have is is old. There will always be harm in our health system, it cannot be avoided. A 2020 OECD report* found that, in developed countries, the direct cost of treating patients who have suffered avoidable medical injury is 8.7% of health expenditure. In Aotearoa New Zealand for the 2024/25 year the health budget is $29.6 billion**. Based on these figures we are spending approximately $𝟐.𝟓 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐲 and harm that is caused to New Zealanders in the health system! * The Economics of Patient Safety: from analysis to action ** https://lnkd.in/gjYyaggx An independent Patient Safety Commissioner in NZ will put patient safety as a priority.

Opening session of the High Level Conference on the Future EU Health Union with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health and representatives of young people reflecting on the future of the Health agenda in the EU . Important points: * EU is a market and this can be a healthy market rather then one that creates diseases. * The challenge is to create an environment that enables people to have a healthy life style. * The big industries business model is to explore our human weaknesses -addictive substances like tobacco and alcohol. * Their model has a detrimental societal impact, in particular for those who are more vulnerable contributing to widening inequalities. * A concrete way forward towards prevention and health is needed. Labeling of alcoholic beverages and the Directive on Tobacco Products are long overdue. One of the workshops during the HL Conference will cover this topic.

🙏🏼 Urgent request @everyone The new coalition government has asked for feedback on the World Health Organisation's (WHO) proposal to take over sovereignty of all member countries - with a) new international health laws and b) a new pandemic treaty. Instead of just advising on health, as they do now, these new laws and treaty will make the action of the NZ Govt legally binding with future instructions of how to manage health in NZ coming from officials from the WHO overseas. There are no "bill of right" clauses in any documents so that individual rights about personal health decisions are protected. There will be the WHO way and no other way. The NZ govt will pay penalties (of millions) if they don't abide by WHO instructions on whatever type of health issue or pandemic is identified, and at whatever cost that may come to, whether we as a country can afford it or not. Seriously - this is not a joke. We have until Sat 18th February to reply to 2 different govt departments about how we would like them to negotiate. Exit the WHO. I say no to losing our sovereignty as a nation. NZ must make up it's own mind on how to handle any medical emergency or climate events, and The link below has a lot of information - scroll down towards the bottom to get bullet points of what types of things are being proposed - if you want more detail. [https://lnkd.in/gcvitjNx) To just quickly say no to what the WHO is proposing these are the links: Ministry of Health - New International Legally Binding Laws: [https://lnkd.in/gdf8XHaw) Ministry for Trade (MFat) - New Legally Binding Pandemic Treaty: [https://lnkd.in/gc8A3Yin

Why do important decisions with major repercussions for people often happen on Fridays? Is it a coincidence? This decision is stripping federal agencies like the EPA, the CDC, the FDA and others of their power to regulate decisions that can impact the health and well being of others. Not everyone is in agreement on how significant this ruling is, but knowing it happened this past Friday is nevertheless critical! #publichealth #healthequity #healthjustice #environmentalhealth #onehealth #health #supremecourt #healthpolicy #foodsecurity #foodsafety #watersafety #cleanwater #cleanair https://lnkd.in/dbppBCis
