After the Federalists of Alexander Hamilton fell by the way side, America’s prophet Thomas Jefferson’s Democrat-Republicans, akin to Prophet Mohammed’s Shia and Sunni in the Middle East more than a millennium earlier than the American founding, one faction first became the plantation and slave-owning Democrats of the South and eventually the second faction became the emerging industrial abolitionist Republicans of the North led by Abraham Lincoln.
Jefferson, an autodidact and polymath like Franklin but not in the same league, was a man of words, letters, and ideas, and a slave-owning agrarian who was skeptical about machinery, nevertheless experimented with it to make it useful for his pursuit of knowledge and largely idyllic and intellectual solitary way of life after his presidency, if not as adept at it as Benjamin Franklin or as capitalist as Alexander Hamilton.
Unlike Washington, he did not liberate his slaves in his will upon his death even though he firmly believed in his own Declaration, because he feared the fledgling country founded on the constitutional compromise over slavery would fall apart.
If he and the founders could declare independence from subordination to those of his own race and ethnicity, the British, to put in place a country founded on an unprecedented and revolutionary idea, as fellow human beings he expected his black slaves to do the same to him and always struggled over why they were not or could not.
Black emancipation from among the slaves, as much as he wanted it to happen, never happened in his life time and he was disappointed for it.
Like white owners in baseball recruiting black players because it would make them money, it required white industrial capitalism of Lincoln to eventually liberate black slaves to make North money.
Sport and money in America is still the same. White owners and coaches and a diversity of players, but mostly black and well paid with little control over their careers except when they can become free agent stars in their own right who are few and far between. Hollywood and theater is likewise.
For the North, the economics of abolition, despite it also being consistent with the Declaration of Independence as Lincoln had reminded the country at war with itself in the Gettysburg Address, emancipated slaves when paid a compensation for their labor would add to economic growth by adding their consumption to the U.S. economy.
For feudal South, uncompensated black slave labor whose care and feeding is a cost of agricultural production similar to domesticated bulls, cattle, and horses, rather than a benefit besides being also inhuman and inconsistent with the Declaration.
Republicans must drop white supremacy and black Americans should stop complaining and learn capitalism to become owners and coaches, not remain workers.
Calling each other un-American will not help, akin to Shia and Sunni and Catholic and Protestant calling each other infidels.
