I've been following the shifting critical assessment of the Hewlett Foundation's Beyond Neoliberalism program (full disclosure: I'm a Hewlett grantee). At first, the general take from much of the punditry was largely that it was an excessively academic enterprise, too far removed from the rough & tumble of movement work. But now, the dominant critical response, coming from center-left commentators like Matthew Yglesias and Jonathan Chait, is that the program was *too* successful, having a significant, and deleterious, near-term impact on Biden-administration policy thinking, dragging it to the left. Here's Chait: "Whatever the merits of their underlying analysis of American politics, the theory of change laid out by its funders was fully vindicated. The surge of anti-neoliberal thought transformed conventional wisdom within the elite ranks of the progressive movement. It rendered Obama’s legacy an orphan and created the expectation that the Democratic Party was racing into a bold new era in which the political and fiscal constraints that he had operated within had disappeared completely." Hewlett modeled its efforts after conservative funders in 70s and 80s, trying to reshape dominant norms of political economy. Their work has generally been considered some of the most impact philanthropic initiatives of the last half century. I think it's way too soon to make similar judgments abt Hewlett's program and that critics of policy generally tend to overstate the impact that funders have on its implementation. But if Chait and Yglesias's intuitions end up being even remotely accurate, then this will end up being added to the pantheon of major philanthropic milestones. Fodder for future historians--and contemporary journalists. In other words, if this story is true, it's vital that we get more reporting on how Hewlett (& Omidyar's & other progressive funders') impact was achieved.
