A new outbreak of Mpox has been detected in several countries, but a stream of vile, hate-filled disinformation about the virus has spread across the entire web. Mpox disinformation narratives observed by GDI are highly similar to falsehoods shared about the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 90s, with overtly racist and homophobic messaging and widespread pseudoscience. Conspiracy theories about the Mpox vaccine and the origins and impacts of the virus abound. And malign foreign actors like Russia are seizing upon all this disinformation to use Mpox as a tool to push their own agenda. As public health authorities work to contain Mpox and vaccinate vulnerable populations, they'll have to contend with the toxic information landscape around the virus simultaneously. The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded the alarm on the global surge of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including syphilis, with new cases surpassing eight million among adults aged 15-49, and 230,000 resulting in syphilis-related deaths. The Americas and Africa experienced the highest increases. The rise in STIs, coupled with inadequate declines in new HIV and viral hepatitis infections, poses a significant threat to health targets within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed grave concerns over the escalating incidence of syphilis, emphasizing the urgent need for action. This sets us back significantly and we need to be more vigillant against STIs as individuals, families and communities to reduce community transmission. #UNICEF fully supports Africa CDC’s focus on integrated health systems to address these diseases, as outlined in its 2023–2027 Strategic Plan. These efforts align with UNICEF's own priorities of improving child health, strengthening systems, and ensuring equitable access to essential services. Together, with Africa CDC we can: Strengthen Primary Healthcare Systems: By improving the availability and quality of services at the community level, we can ensure that lifesaving interventions reach children and families, particularly in marginalized areas. Scale Up Preventive Measures: Access to vaccines, bed nets, and preventative drugs must be universal. UNICEF will continue to support vaccine rollouts and preventive care initiatives that reduce the risk of infections before they take hold. Empower Communities: Health outcomes improve when communities are informed and engaged. UNICEF prioritizes educating families, particularly mothers, on early diagnosis and treatment, helping to bridge the gap between health systems and those in need. Innovate for Efficiency and Impact: Advances in technology, data collection, and digital health platforms are key to optimizing resources and enhancing health service delivery. UNICEF is committed to leveraging these innovations to accelerate progress.

We were all shocked by the public inquiry into the infected blood scandal and the scale of people impacted. More than 30,000 people in the UK were infected with HIV and Hepatitis C in the 1970s and 80s after being given contaminated blood products, and made into unwilling participants of clinical trials. Closed cultures are one of the biggest risks to people with support needs in social care services. The CQC identifies a closed culture as one that ‘can lead to harm, including human rights breaches such as abuse’, where concerns are less likely be to be observed or reported. Due to a shortage at the time, blood products were being imported from the US that contained potentially fatal viruses. The incident is described as “the biggest treatment disaster in the history of the NHS”, with doctors, the government and the NHS accused of repeatedly failing patients. In her latest blog, CEO Anna Lunts discussed the infected blood scandal and the effects of closed cultures 👉 https://lnkd.in/dzArYwBP #infectedbloodscandal #closedcultures #noblameculture #opencultures #nhs #socialcare

Strong, resilient health and community systems form the foundation of the fight against HIV, TB and malaria – and fortify countries so they can beat back diseases and prepare for future health threats. Did you know that 'Every year, The Global Fund invests over US$2 billion in more than 110 countries to do this vital work alongside countries and communities? This includes investing in medical oxygen, high-tech laboratories and diagnostics, disease surveillance systems, strong supply chains and community health workers." #healthsystems #DigitalHealth

People most at risk of contracting infectious diseases include those with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic illnesses like diabetes or HIV. Additionally, those living in crowded or unsanitary conditions, such as refugees or people in poverty, are more susceptible. Healthcare workers and individuals who travel frequently to areas with outbreaks also face increased risk due to their higher exposure to pathogens. Lack of access to vaccines and proper healthcare further heightens vulnerability. #Risk #Infectiousdiseases
