School meals are the world’s most widespread social safety net, but there are still significant gaps, especially in countries where these programs are needed most. Food banks are helping to fill those gaps through local and sustainable school meal programs. Our “Developing a School Feeding Program” guide lays out the steps for designing a successful program that addresses child hunger, reduces waste, and uses local resources. Did you know? Brazil boasts one of the largest school meal programs in the world, serving upward of 40 million children in public education every day. For many, that midday meal is the only one they receive, so when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, food insecurity rates soared. As the country works to recover, its government is focused on strengthening public policies to combat hunger including increased federal funding for the program. An elementary school in São Paulo is going a step further, asking parents to manage on-site gardens and teaching youngsters how to cook with the food grown in them. The city also aims to source all school lunch supplies from producers who practice sustainable farming by 2026 and serve 100% organic meals by 2030. Though it is the students receiving free food, the program is expected to have a trickle-down effect. In low-income families, often the children eat first as the adults would rather go without. This worry is alleviated when adults know their children will be fed a proper meal at school. It is therefore argued that school meals reduce hunger not just for kids but for adults too.

Friday March 22nd was World Water Day, and I really enjoyed watching this webinar from All Hands and Hearts, hosted by Siobhan McRae and Kasia Ozga. Here are some ‘Did you know?’s that I took away from the session: - There are 2.2 billion people around the world who live without access to safe water. - Water scarcity isn’t just having to travel long distances to access water. In some places, the only way to get it is to buy it in bottles, making it inaccessible for many people. - People with limited access to water are often forced to choose between thirst and hygiene. - Lack of gendered toilets in schools can be a barrier to girls’ attendance. - Improving WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) facilities is a good investment: it improves health, productivity, environment and social outcomes and returns $4.3 USD for every $1 spent. Simple and cost effective solutions include gutter and tank systems to harvest rainwater, Biosand water filters which have minimal installation and maintenance costs, and education. I love hearing positive impact stories and although we have a long way to go to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of clean water and sanitation for all by 2030, it’s good to know we’re on the way. #worldwaterday #allhandsandhearts #waterandsanitationforall #unsustainabledevelopmentgoals #volunteering https://lnkd.in/ggcFbQYe

Let's get right to the meat of it: only 12% of American households have access to public composting programs. That's nuts! 🐿 But the berry good news? 🥕 In a recent survey, 96% of non-composters indicated they would compost if it were easier to do so. THIS is where the government needs to step in. 🍊 Orange you juiced to get advocating? Stick with us, the puns get wurst. 🌭 🚨 But this campaign ends on July 12th! https://lnkd.in/ggiRzfpr Explore the Issue Briefing for more stats on the problems + solutions. #foodwaste #compost #composting #fooddonations #foodsecurity #climatesolutions

This is great to see, some much needed explicit language around controlling hot food takeaways in National Planning Policy 🤩 🗣The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is seeking views on how they might revise National Planning Policy to support wider objectives, namely, in the interest of #PublicHealth, Chapter 8 on 'Delivering Community Needs' - Promoting Healthy Communties. ✅️ This consultation seeks views on the proposed approach to revising the National Planning Policy Framework in order to achieve sustainable growth in our planning system. Full consultation document here: https://lnkd.in/d6yfFbmt 🤞 Luckily in Swindon, we're looking at ways of being proactive with this, but to have support at local, as well as national level will strengthen the case for creating healthier food environments.
