The Gottman Institute’s Post

It’s National Hug Day! Hugs aren’t just comforting, they’re scientifically proven to strengthen emotional bonds. By boosting oxytocin, known as the “love hormone,” hugs create feelings of trust and closeness. They also lower cortisol levels, helping to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm. According to Gottman’s research: ✨Hugs activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress. 💞Physical touch creates emotional safety and strengthens bonds. ⏳Even a brief 6-second hug can turn toward your partner’s bids for connection.

I encourage my client couples to hug daily every morning for 6 seconds to 20 seconds for the bonding experience; additionally adding a 6 second kiss on the lips!
