Creative Leader + Educator | Over 15 years powering data-driven growth for startups, nonprofits, and education through transformative brand strategies.
Capturing media in the field can be a whirlwind. 🎥 😵💫 Here are the top three tips I've learned over the years that help me create efficient compositions: 🥉 Obey the rule of thirds: You can position your subjects in a more dynamic landscape, making sure that your image feels complete with the world around them being part of the capture. ↔️ Stay horizontal: Especially when you shoot in high-res, using a horizontal composition provides more opportunities to crop the image in creative ways, getting more images in just one shot. 🏃♀️ Find Mid-Action: When capturing things in motion, you want to aim for the middle of the action. It will better convey the movement to your audience, rather than capturing before or after the action has taken place. Whether you're capturing on a DSLR or a phone, these tips will take your media capture to the next level! #videoproduction #photography #professionaldevelopment

This week, I attended a webinar by Fairpicture on dignity in humanitarian photography and videography. While working for the Red Cross, we discussed ethics in visual storytelling almost on a daily basis. I coordinated audiovisual production through the Field Communication Unit (FCU) https://lnkd.in/es5C-AqJ, consisting of over 100 comms professionals trained to tell stories of people in humanitarian emergencies. I also prepared guidelines on ethical comms to support this work. Although not working in the aid sector at the moment, insights by Jörg Arnold Savannah Dodd and Hasan Belal are relevant to anyone capturing people’s stories in images. (Spiced with some personal observations here.) 💫Dignity. Ask what dignity looks like in an image. Is the person represented as an individual? 💫Hope. Showing suffering is not a sustainable let alone ethical approach. Organisations need to build long-term narratives, follow up the stories and use solution-oriented storytelling that can inspire hope and encourage sustained engagement. 💫Time. High-quality ethical storytelling requires spending time with people and looking around to find other stories that need to be told. This helps to challenge your own assumptions. 💫Storyteller. Ask who should tell the story. If we want diverse voices, we need diversity among storytellers. 💫Bigger picture. Invest in providing context and telling about the systemic issues underlining crises. A single person/story doesn’t represent a group/country. 💫Informed consent. Make it clear that people have the right to say no to being filmed. The power-relation can be imbalanced if you’re the one providing aid. 💫Digital exposure. Show people how their images will be used, i.e. print out screenshots and explain how many users can see the image. Share pictures with them if possible. 💫Data protection. Thanks to GDPR, anyone in Europe can withdraw their consent at any time. Organisations need to develop infrastructure to manage this. 💫Network. You need good relationships with locals to understand what’s possible. Local photographers know the context and can have better access. Interested? ➡️ Recording of the webinar is available, check below👇🏼 ➡️ You can test and share feedback on the Fairpicture’s new FairConsent App for obtaining ethical informed consent. It’s available in 20 languages and is GDPR complaint. ➡️ Guide to ethical communications & Code of Conduct by Dóchas are excellent resources for humanitarian and development comms. They just updated the guide in 2023. https://lnkd.in/eMTYkgK2 #EthicalCommunications #HumanitarianCommunications #photography #videography
On Monday the 19th of February Fairpicture hosted our 10th FairTalk on #dignity in #Humanitarian #Photography and #Videography. Where more than 100 likeminded practitioners and visual creators from all over the world came together with a shared commitment to ethical communication practices. We are grateful for our panelists who provided insight into the topic from their own areas of expertise. Thank you to Savannah Dodd, Jörg Arnold and Fairpicture's Syrian visual creator Hasan Belal (who isn't on LinkedIn and persisted through a very challenging Damascan internet). We are grateful for your time. If you would like to have a listen to the recording or share it with a colleague you can find it here: https://lnkd.in/e8XAsTbi See you at our next FairTalk! #Fairpicture #FairTalk #dignity #ethicalcommunication #FairContentProduction #EthicalStorytelling #Photography #Videography #EthicalVisualCommunication #StorytellingforBusiness #Storytelling
