The responsibilities of covering farming life are not like those of your typical reporter job. One moment, you’re documenting the livelihood of county fairs; the next you’re talking with a struggling farmworker; or you find yourself surrounded by animals finishing up their lunch on a hot summer day. For some, this might seem like a world apart, but for Report for America corps member Emily Kenny, who grew up on her family farm in Schaller, Iowa, reporting on agriculture and farm life seems natural. For this week’s edition of our newsletter, GroundTruth’s Director of Photography Ben Brody spotlights Kenny’s incredible on-the-ground photojournalism for Spectrum News in Syracuse, NY, illustrating how Kenny uses her personal experience to better her coverage of agriculture and food production in rural communities: https://lnkd.in/eDm59hUb Subscribe for more: https://bit.ly/3Qo4jpk #farmlife #agriculture #news #journalism #newyork #reporting

Competition between individuals and communities happens over long periods of time. Individuals can compete in two ways: exploitative (using up shared resources) and interference (direct conflict). This study used GPS data on deer and cattle to look at these two types of competition between the animals. The idea was that exploitative effects from reduced food wouldn't happen right away, but interference effects would be immediate. The researchers looked at deer movements like home range size, speed, and habitat selection for 30 days before and after introducing cattle - not long enough for exploitative competition impacts. Home range size was used to indicate habitat quality, assuming cattle degraded the habitat beyond just reducing food. Join Texas Tech University's Timothy Fitzgerald, Ph.D., for a seminar on wild horses and burrows in economic perspective. The event is presented by our College's Department of Agriculture, Veterinary & Rangeland Sciences and the University's College of Business. When: Friday, Jan. 26, 11 a.m. - noon Where: University of Nevada, Reno's Fleischmann Agriculture Building, Room 301 Seminar abstract: Wild horses and burros are a unique economic asset, enjoying federal protections stronger than those afforded to most other wildlife. Management challenges created by restrictions on a non-native species are evident in current populations that exceed targets by as much as three times. The imbalance between management targets and reality has grown in recent years, concomitant with mounting fiscal and opportunity costs. Programmatic changes have not been able to materially change the reality on the ground. An economic perspective provides key insights about the management problem, but also leaves unanswered questions that identify several fruitful directions for research. In particular, additional documentation and enumeration of the ecological opportunity costs of excess populations and the benefits of populations on the range would help bolster economic analysis of wild horses and burro and inform policy. Accessibility contact: Persons in need of special accommodations or assistance should contact Paul Lessick, civil rights and compliance coordinator, at plessick@unr.edu or 702-257-5577 at least five days prior to the scheduled event with their needs or for more information. 📷: Wild horses being released back onto the Reveille Range in Nye County, Nevada.
