What if some of Mozart’s early string quartets weren’t really string quartets at all? In The Uncertain Origins of Mozart’s Early String Quartets, we explore the ambiguities surrounding K.155, K.158, and K.159, works that are often classified as "Divertimento Quartets." Could they have been part of an orchestral series repurposed into string quartets? And what do comparisons with Cambini’s revolutionary quartets tell us about Mozart’s early struggles? Join us as we question the narrative around these works and uncover what Mozart may have truly intended. Read the full article on Mozartrazom: https://lnkd.in/deU6iXnQ "Sometimes, it seems, Mozart had little more to say."

The MECHANICS of MUSIC I made my own midi player because I retune the whole file to "stretched octave". I use up to four midi instances of "virtualMIDIsynth", that is, maximum 60 simultaneous retuned notes (one note per channel for 4 x 15 channels). I pioneered for past few decades the idea that the music octave is not 2:1. The role of "harmonics" in sound is not music, but "individuality" of each unique sound, say, trumpet vs flute. Of course there are other factors also such as those in the time domain that help us identify each "instrument". Imagine some animals hear not individual "sounds" but each individual harmonic. Music will make no sense. Such is the case with no few professional musicians struck with faulted hearing. Interestingly, ear doctors find their ears "perfect", but they cannot hear music as music any more. This is why midi music played on electronic instruments or computer never seem to sound right. The ear very soon becomes not able to correlate each component harmonic to each relevant "note". In order that the ear / our brain can hear "notes" vs each and every harmonic, a database is kept of each tiny frequency deviation of every harmonic associated with each instrument. This important consideration is mostly neglected in all fields of music studies. Quite a few research studies concluded that the music octave is really stretched, this is one of those: QUOTE Octave discrimination: An experimental confirmation of the "stretched" subjective octave Peter A. Dobbins and Lola L. Cuddy Department of Psychology. Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada K7L 3N6 6 August 1980 ... the subjective octave was "stretched" slightly sharper than the physical octave of 1200 cents. The magnitude of this stretch, about 20 cents on the average, replicated earlier findings obtained by the method of adjustment ... PACS numbers: 43.66.Hg, 43.66.Fc, 43.75.z [FLW] UNQUOTE This is an audio example: https://lnkd.in/gMFCji5Z Why and what is the size of the whole tone, why the octave is not divided other than 12? The 12-notes-per-octave scale is a biological coincidence. DPOAE is such, with input frequencies f1 and f2, the ear will generate two series of frequencies following nf1 - (n-1)f2 and nf2 - (n-1)f1 (D. Hecker, 2011) Say for simplicity sake, f1 = 8Hz, f2 = 9Hz (9:8 whole tone interval), n = 10: nf2 - (n-1)f1 = 10 * 9 - (10 - 1) * 8 = 90 - 72 = 18Hz Hence, two notes a whole tone apart produce an OAE signal frequency precisely double the higher note. However, 9:8 is the only interval which stacks up to produce an interval passable as "octave" (within an "half-tone"). This is why the music octave must consist six whole tones. This is the fundamental, tangible and physical foundation to Music. The product of six time the fraction, 9/8 to the sixth power, equals 2.0272865, or 1,223.46 cents. This agrees with deductions of many research studies (music octave should be about 20 cents stretched).

The second in a series on the instruments of a symphony orchestra - The viola is a string instrument that is usually bowed. Slightly larger than a violin, it has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century, it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth higher) and the cello (which is tuned an octave lower). Here's all you ever wanted to know about the viola, not respected as much as the violin but gaining in popularity: https://lnkd.in/e2XP---c
