We need to see more VCs thinking ahead and addressing critical issues before crises occur. True vision is demonstrated by showcasing the impact of portfolio companies during times of crisis. At OpalAi, we were awarded funding from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration SBIR for AI-enabled wildfire prevention system, validating the potential of our technology to tackle this pressing challenge. However, despite this recognition and progress, raising funds from institutional investors has been nearly impossible. The reason? Most VCs and investors still prioritize profitability over meaningful impact. This highlights a deeper systemic issue: when profit consistently takes precedence, solving urgent problems like environmental preservation becomes almost unattainable. It’s time to rethink our priorities. Real progress happens when long-term impact takes precedence over short-term gains. Let’s work together to build a future where innovation and sustainability drive meaningful change. “We don't have to do all of it alone. We were never meant to.” Brené Brown Our cleanup efforts are coming along, we’ve been pulling our wet sheet rock downstairs and are assessing the rest. It isn’t fun and I’d be lying if I told you I’ve had a positive attitude about this. I’ve been annoyed, tired, bitter, frustrated, and sad. I know it could be so much worse, and this sucks too. The silver lining is COMMUNITY. As a family we are doing this together. As a neighborhood we are sharing info and checking in on neighbors. As an island we are sharing resources, identifying open businesses so we can support them, and figuring this out together. We appreciate all of your love and support 💗 These pictures look deceivingly “clean”, but it’s a mess for sure. Sharing because so many of you have asked, and I am so grateful for all of your offers of support. We heard electric was turned on last night (Saturday) after we left for our hotel. We check out today and will go home. The boys school is still being assessed and they may have to be in a different building for a bit. It will all get worked out, but for now it feels very disorganized. This week my priorities are: 1- Family - be present and help them feel good mentally and physically 2- My Season of Success workshop - I need to clarify and re-prioritize my 4th quarter goals just as much as the attendees I appreciate all of your kind words and patience as we pull this all together! I hope whatever struggle you are facing right now, you know that you aren’t alone. Support is all around you - ask for it and accept it. Three months into our new strategic plan, and check! Progress being made. Like most strategic plans, the proof's in the pudding. Plans aren't made to sit on a shelf. I'm super proud of the OHS team, who's making sure that doesn't happen. One of the pillars of the new strategic plan is to provide more second changes for all animals - and our community was pretty specific: they're concerned about homeless cats. So, we need to find out more, to figure out how best to help. Ottawa connections - can you help? YOU ONLY NEED ONE MINUTE! To achieve our goal, we've launched a very quick survey about outdoor cats.
