It's been nearly 4 years to the day since an industry friend and seed investor in GO Lab, Inc. called to ask me if I knew anything about dry-process wood fiber insulation. I didn't know much. And being a callused product of the lumber and building materials industry, I wasn't sure if I wanted to know more. Even so, he connected me with GO Lab CEO and Co-founder, Joshua Henry, to hear a pitch. Though I was (and still am) a tough sell, Josh convinced me that I did indeed want to know more. A question and an introduction are enough to start a journey for anyone. The first steps of this journey began working alongside an amazing team to build a capital stack during COVID to revitalize a shuttered paper mill in Madison, Maine for the purpose of manufacturing something "new" for the construction industry. I'm not sure what is more difficult, asking investors for money during a pandemic or suggesting a "new" product to my peers in the building products sector. But we found success in both areas. It has been a journey of sharing the right story with the right people and building partnerships with people who understand the meaning of the word partnership. We've surrounded ourselves with those committed to mission, stewardship, and collaboration. We've surrounded ourselves with people who solve problems with purpose far beyond the economics of doing so. This week, I'll be journeying out of my role as CMO at TimberHP, though I'll remain close by the very capable team to support where needed. One question has given me the opportunity to provide a hundred solutions and, I'm sure, the opportunity to create a hundred additional questions. One introduction has led to a thousand handshakes and many friendships. I look forward to the next question and the next introduction.

It's the end of Week 1 of the work at Leylands. It has been all about preparation and getting the property stripped back to a blank canvas, ready for the next phase of development It’s early days, and like any change, it’s messy, but there’s something satisfying about watching transformation take place from such a fundamental level. The groundwork being laid now will set the foundation for the success of the entire project. Having the right team on board to do the work and deliver the vision is essential! Mark, our super-experienced builder, has done a sterling job with assembling a great group of professional tradespeople and coordinating who is on-site and when. It will be exciting to see our vision materialise as the upgrades begin to take shape over the next week! I always look for parallel learning in leadership and property. This week has reinforced the importance of spending enough time on getting clear on the vision and planning the work upfront, to roll out as quickly and effortlessly as possible when work gets underway. This is important as time genuinely is money in the property game – interest on loans quickly mounts up, and we don’t want to waste either on avoidable mistakes or having to redo work. It also struck me how progress comes from the process of clearing away the old to make way for the new. Whether it’s old walls or old ways of thinking, creating space for growth comes from letting go.
