This will give mass timber companies the ability to compete for federal construction, renovation, or acquisition of public buildings and for military construction. August 24, 2023: Today is National Maryland Day! This day celebrates the seventh state to join the United States. Some fun facts about Maryland: ·      Maryland was named after the queen of England. ·      Including the islands that are part of Maryland’s territory, Maryland has 4,431 miles of tidal shoreline. ·      The official state sport of Maryland is jousting. ·      The state drink of Maryland is milk. ·      The first school in the United States, King William’s School, was built in Annapolis in 1696. The WMATA Branch Avenue Bridges in Suitland, Maryland, were designed to accommodate the project’s environmental permit conditions. The bridges pass through environmentally sensitive wetlands and over the busy Suitland Parkway carrying light rail commuters between Maryland’s suburban Branch Avenue Station and Washington D.C. Span-by-span construction of the precast concrete segmental superstructure from above minimized impacts to wetlands and parkway traffic below. FIGG designed the elevated rail structures for Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). #civilengineering #bridge #construction #maryland

7 Senators Ask U.S. Government to Use More #MassTimber. And this is just the start. Senators from Oregon (both), Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine sent a letter all about #masstimber to the Government Services Agency (GSA). They say #masstimber creates rural jobs, reduces wildfire, improves forest resiliency and reduces the carbon footprint of the federal government. And with 253 million square feet of federally funded construction - it matters. They asked: - What's being done in the budget to support mass timber? - How can federal agencies use more mass timber? - What challenges face #masstimber adoption? - And how is the GSA working with the Forest Service on this? The US Army Corps of Engineers recently required vertical construction projects to consider at least one option where mass timber is a substantial structural component when comparing structural systems during early design starting FY 2027. The successful restoration of Fort Jefferson Tortugas Harbor Lighthouse was a testament to teamwork. Silman, A TYLin Company's preservation expertise, Stone & Lime Historic Restoration Services's historic masonry skills, and Plan B Engineering's knowledge of in structural stability and logistics worked together to overcome the challenges of this demanding site. Our role involved designing a scaffold system to fully support the deteriorated cast iron structure. This included a redundant lateral system robust enough to withstand hurricane-force winds. The scaffold was tested by the onslaught of Category 5 Hurricane Irma in 2017, which passed nearby with no damage to the lighthouse. Additionally, the same scaffold and bracing system was instrumental in the disassembly of the structure by Robinson Iron Corp for offsite restoration. Using a detailed sequence developed in collaboration with Silman, PlanB provided direction for carefully disassembling the structure piece by piece while using the scaffolding to hold the remaining structure in place. This unique project required our team to travel by seaplane to stay on the remote island for extended periods to direct the disassembly process in real-time. With input from Robinson Iron, a gantry system into the scaffold significantly expedited the removal of larger cast iron panels, which allowed the entire lighthouse to be disassembled during a short window of suitable weather. This project was more than a technical endeavor; it showcased how the right team of skilled professionals, effectively collaborating, can address unique challenges. The job demanded a thoughtful and effective design approach suited to the remote location, underlining our commitment to thoughtful preservation. I missed your presentation but my career has been defined by resilient (durable) concrete! I have 30+ year old pavement, slab, and rail infrastructure (direct fixation) using zero slump unreinforced concrete placed to achieve 100% density. Only 150# cement per CY balance high carbon fly ash with strength over 7,000 psi and durability 7-10 higher than conventional concrete yet there seems to be little interest in the material that will replace asphalt (becomes extinct as US opens new refineries to refine U.S. domestic light crude from shale which produces no waste for asphalt). With over 90% of pavement in U.S. presently asphalt and extinction with 5-10 years paving industry will need a different material! Also same mixing and placing equipment can use 100% RAP, water based emulsifier, cement, and water to produce/place cold regeneration pavement which uses cement as binder therefore it won’t rut or pothole like asphalt.

SteelMaster Buildings is responsible for the design and manufacturing of the buildings used on the OPBAT base, including the “S Model” steel structure with a bi-fold door where the helicopters are stored. The use of a commercial bi-fold door is a strategic design choice because as the door comes up like a garage door, it folds in half and is slightly angled to allow rain to drain off the front of the door and not collect on top of it. Also, because these doors are so large, the fact that they fold in half instead of just pulling up all together takes much of the stress off the front of the building. https://lnkd.in/gpukK2tp
