I met Ryan Horvath just in time! ⏳ >>> Ryan is in the business of guaranteeing yields for institutional investors. Super interesting. Here's an example: When GM opens a factory, it's usually in a remote area. Factory workers need accommodation. Existing accommodation is usually somewhat dilapidated. The teams at Reynolds Asset Management, are seasoned operators in converting these buildings into highly livable dwellings. Thereby increasing occupancy to 90%+. Institutional investors with exposure to real estate love this. They buy these upgraded buildings because the rental yield is somewhat guaranteed due to the superior condition compared to alternative housing in the area. <<< Ryan's problem is that he's an operator, but also needs to keep finding opportunity zones. Two different jobs. The context switching is a killer. Before we caught up, he was going to hire an entry level Acquisitions Analyst in NYC for (~$120K) to take on the task of finding investment opportunities. Now he is going to; ✅ Work with someone who has 5+ years M&A experience working at KPMG, Deloitte, or McKinsey ✅ Use more complex financial models to discover high IRR projects ✅ Deploy more sophisticated risk controls ✅ Save half his budget (or hire two analysts) ... Experience vs potential? Arguably the biggest question to address in any senior hire. Good article from Sifted on some of the specifics of first-of-a-kind tech and infrastructure hiring. ▶The bottom line is that, whether it's a lead engineer or a CFO, you want someone who's done it before. Ideally. 💲For the CFO, raising and structuring finance is a big part of the role. You need to talk the same language as the bankers and be able to explain risk to investors. So the recommendation is to have a former investment banker on the team - someone well-versed in selling the financial story. When I helped hire a CFO for a carbon capture business recently, most of the shortlist were bankers-turned-CFOs. But not every banker will adapt to the lean startup environment, and there are plenty of examples from other backgrounds: the CFO at Mura Technology (advanced recycling, over £150m raised) has spent time in M&A and Investor Relations; the CFO at Geopura (hydrogen technology pioneer, £114m of debt and equity) is a dual-qualified accountant and lawyer. Ultimately, I think it's best to keep an open mind. 🎯Fit with the business and the rest of the executive team is key, but without access to capital, the FOAK won't get that far. #cfohiring #highgrowth #venturecapital #infrastructure
