The profile of a caregiver is changing. Not long ago a "caregiver" was more aligned with a grandmother (older, not working, looking after her spouse or grandchildren). Today, the "sandwich generation" has changed the caregiver profile (younger, working either full or part time, looking after both elderly relatives and children). Just like the introduction of mental health services to employee benefits and early childhood programs, caregiver benefits (like Dovetail®) for employees are the next wave. Recognizing this population of employee and supporting their role as a caregiver will improve productivity, reduce absenteeism/presenteeism and help employers recruit and retain talent. Guardian Life wrote a great caregiver profile of modern caregivers:

Family caregivers take on an infinite number of responsibilities and tasks when it comes to caring for loved ones. But they are facing unprecedented challenges balancing caregiving on top of life's many responsibilities, and many are reaching a breaking point. Guardian Life has released a new study on the state of today's care crisis, "Standing Up and Stepping In: A Modern Look at Caregivers in the US." It offers a powerful lens into the complexity of caregiving today, and underscores the importance of building more infrastructure for family caregivers to support their mental, physical, emotional, and financial health and well-being. the model for getting long-term care insurance is (to put it nicely), sort of wack.
