🌟 Hospitality: The Foundation for Any Career 🌟 As we welcome back our Berea College student workers, I’m reminded of why this is one of my favorite times of the year. There’s something incredibly special about seeing young talent grow and develop through hands-on training in the hospitality industry. Hospitality isn’t just about serving guests—it’s about mastering skills that are valuable in any career. From communication and problem-solving to teamwork and leadership, the lessons learned in hospitality are transferable to any profession. Whether our students go on to work in business, healthcare, education, or beyond, the foundation they build here will serve them well. Being part of their journey is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. Watching them evolve from eager learners into confident professionals is a true privilege. It’s not just about preparing them for jobs in hospitality—it's about equipping them with the tools to succeed in whatever path they choose. Here’s to another year of growth, learning, and success for our student workers! 🌱 #HospitalityTraining #CareerGrowth #StudentSuccess #BereaCollege #LeadershipDevelopment #ProfessionalSkills #HistoricBooneTavern
🎉 Welcome Back, Berea College Student Workers! 🎉 We’re thrilled to have our talented student workers back on campus as they embark on another year of hands-on learning and professional growth through the Berea College Labor Program. Yesterday marked the beginning of orientation, and we’re excited to see these bright individuals contribute their skills, passion, and creativity to our team. At Berea College, the Labor Program is more than just work—it’s an integral part of the educational experience. Students earn their education by working in roles that complement their studies, preparing them for success both in their careers and in life. Here at Historic Boone Tavern Hotel & Restaurant of Berea College, we’re proud to be a part of this unique program, where students gain real-world experience in hospitality, management, and service. We look forward to another year of collaboration, innovation, and shared success with our student workers. Here’s to a fantastic year ahead! 💼🎓 #BereaCollege #LaborProgram #StudentSuccess #HandsOnLearning #HistoricBooneTavern #HospitalityExcellence

See, having a newborn will have you up at 1am pondering the similarities of Master-Level Professionals as Residence Hall Coordinators and Collegiate Recovery Coordinators. I don’t know this to be 💯% accurate, but how many Res Life Professionals work in such capacity after the age of say, 35? I think I may have been looking at the staffing issue in Collegiate Recovery through a wrong perspective. Instead of finding ways to keep our Program Coordinators and Directors for 10 years, maybe we should be training our CRC students to work in the field either at their Alma mater or other schools in the region on their way to their career destination. Someone even mentioned on a previous post that Collegiate Recovery jobs could look similar to that of college athletics that 3-5yrs be a standard of the field before going on to another another university likely as a Director or Associate Director elsewhere.

To help them acclimate to campus life, all incoming Stonehill College students are required to take a one-credit “First-Year Experience (FYE)” course during their first semester. Volunteer faculty, staff and returning students facilitate this class. We recently asked this year’s FYE facilitators to offer their best advice on studying, figuring out the best career fit, and making friends in college. “Accept change, confusion and new experiences,” Michael Sheehan ’25 said. “It’s completely normal to not be quite sure what you want to do. My best recommendation is to say ‘yes’ to classes or experiences outside your major. They can be quite eye-opening.” Visit our website to read other tips offered by our FYE facilitators: https://zurl.co/zBmO

Sending the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (Queensland)’s 50 Policy Futures Graduates out into the public service this week to start their rotations through departments. My advice to them last week: 🍍Public service is a verb. 🍍Political views are ok, even strongly held ones, as long as you leave them at the door and act impartially in your role. 🍍Give frank, fearless and sound advice. 🍍We serve the government of the day, but our first loyalty is to the people of Queensland. 🍍Process is part of public service- we deal with public money after all. But those who stand out use process to find a way to done and get results. 🍍There’s meaning and purpose in a public service career. But sometimes it takes a few role changes to find it. Don’t settle until you do. Life’s too short. #2024policyfutures #graduates

The pipeline for new teachers looks like it won’t make up for the current staffing shortfalls. This and more in today's edition of The Sunriser:

"Culture eats strategy for breakfast." (Drucker, 1991.) Flexible working, with careful planning can ensure better staff engagement and thus better productivity. Great to see this initiative in a school Solihull led by Stuart Shelton. Whilst we may not be able to accommodate such structural change, but as school leaders, we must ensure the emotionally intelligent mindset to show consideration to employees and shape the work culture. A couple of easy yet mindful things are: ● allowing staff to attend the children's school events ● or recognising and giving time off in lieu (TOIL) for support or site staff (who are often paid a lot less than teaching staff and have less annual leave) who you know have been staying back late in preparation for an event Of course such things need to be carefully managed by knowing your staff and their needs, in order to avoid some taking advantage and others jeopardising any policy or practice. Where it goes wrong is where these 'perks' are weaponised and used with bias by school (mis)leaders where some are given the time off but others aren't even if it is for the same 'request' or where some are recognised or seen to be given credit but others are overlooked for the same event/activity. #culture #workplace #mindfulness #EQLeadership
Fantastic to feature on BBC News today, showing how St Peter’s is leading the way in flexible working arrangements for teaching staff. Hopefully we will see a greater retention, more energetic staff and ultimately a better experience for pupils https://lnkd.in/gB7tHAid

Today the Common Sense Institute Colorado spoke about career connected learning. In Colorado we are now connecting the education system with jobs now and in the future. The report has five recommendations and is excellent! To simplify the message even more: 1) Show students ALL the opportunities and jobs available including requirements and compensation 2) Honor them for the pathway they choose that best fits them 3) Get out of their way
